1 TA Training Fall 2017 Returning TAs 1 1 1

2 TA Lab Guidelines You are setting an example in the lab
Always wear protective eyewear and lab coat Be 10 min. early to lab to prepare. Students must enter the lab wearing all PPE You are responsible for student compliance Never leave the lab unattended even for a minute Call for someone to come down if you need to leave If safety violations occur The authorities could intervene 2 2 2

3 Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
Lab coats, white ($18) Nitrile Gloves ($0.25/pair) Safety eyewear Reg. Glasses ($6) OTG Glasses ($10) If PPE is not purchased from the stockroom then item must be approved and signed for by stockroom 3 3 3

4 Tell students that this is a chemistry building & accidents may occur.
Lab Evacuation Tell students that this is a chemistry building & accidents may occur. Evacuation Route is Posted by Lab Door Note meeting area for your lab before students arrive Bring your attendance sheet or roster with you Perform Evacuation Drill Lead students out assigned door based on posted route Meet in assigned location and take attendance In a Real Emergency: After taking attendance in designated outdoor assembly area, have students wait for further instructions before dismissing them. 4 4 4

5 Evacuation Route 1st Floor

6 Medical Forms Tell the students they are for emergency only
They will not be seen unless student is unresponsive Follow procedure given by the course instructor. They cannot do a lab unless it is present If it is not present, have them fill out before they perform any lab NO STUDENT WILL BE ALLOWED TO PERFORM ANY LAB EXPERIMENT WITHOUT A MEDICAL FORM. 6 6 6

7 Safety Equipment Check all safety equipment in the lab before the experiment starts Run the eyewash, determine a method to phone for help in case of emergency or for assistance, make sure broken glass container isn’t overflowing 7 7 7

8 Emergency In case of emergency call campus police at (401) 874-2121
Fire alarms are located in the halls If there is a disruptive or troubled student, call (401) Do not leave your lab, immediately send someone to get help Other departmental phone numbers are posted in the lab * If injury results in bodily fluids, contact the stockroom to clean up. Contaminated materials are considered a biohazard and can not be disposed of in the trash. 8 8 8

9 Waste Disposal 102, 105 and 114 all have waste drums that all aqueous waste can be put in BE SURE TO CLOSE THE FUNNEL LID ON THE DRUM Put all waste into proper waste container If lab requires more than one waste bottle, educate the students on each bottle’s contents --If non-compatible substances are mixed in a waste bottle, take the cap off, close the fume hood and call stockroom for help! Make sure nothing spills on the outside of the bottle If there is not a funnel present, request one from the stockroom Make sure waste bottles are closed between uses. **CHM 226 TAs must constantly remind students to dispose waste in proper containers, many chemicals are incompatible 9 9 9

10 Waste Disposal & Labeling
Do not put anything but soap and water in the sinks All chemicals are to be disposed of in waste containers *Note: Spill cleanup materials are also considered hazardous waste … This includes contaminated clothing!!! Waste labels must be kept neat Make sure bottles have legible hazardous waste labels If the label gets ruined, call the stockroom for a replacement Chemical formulas may not be used on a hazardous waste label DO NOT date waste bottles DO NOT transfer waste between labs

11 Waste Labels & Containment
Make sure you have enough waste containers If not, call the stockroom to bring down a new container before the old one is full Do not overfill waste containers. **CHM 102/114 and 105 must monitor barrels, do not let students overflow them! Call stockroom when they are getting full! All waste bottles must be in secondary containment Do not store incompatible wastes in the same containment tray. Drums must be on a spill pallet 11 11 11

12 Lab Maintenance Burets Balances Vernier Systems Hot Plates pH Probes
Etc. When you enter the lab: Check the chemicals, paperwork, lab equipment, waste bottles, paper towels and any other communal items When you leave the lab: Turn off lab equipment and computers, check to make sure waste isn't overflowing, make sure lab benches are clean , check that all drawers are locked and lock doors 12 12 12

13 Chemical Hazards Always be knowledgeable and instruct students about the chemical hazards present SDS information will be available in the lab Prior to the start of the lab familiarize yourself with the SDS and GHS symbols associated with the chemicals you will use in the lab For chemical injuries, give EMS the multi page SDS that is located in the lab. The mini SDS with GHS symbols will be on a key ring in the binder with the complete SDS sheets Be familiar with NFPA Ratings & be able to explain them to students 13 13 13

14 GHS Symbols Health/physical/environmental hazards 14

15 Chemical Spills If a small spill occurs Use a spill pad to absorb it
If you need more spill pads to fully clean up the area, call the stockroom to report the spill and get some help. Certain materials will require more help, such as concentrated acids, bases etc. If the spill is large Use the spill kit if necessary Isolate the area Call the stockroom for help Dispose all spill pads & spill response materials in the appropriate waste container. 15 15 15

16 Chrome Boxes Password: Can be found in the TA drawer 16

17 Google Voice This is an alternative to the stockroom number ( ) It will connect you to the stockroom personnel who are currently working You can call or text this number

18 Google Hangouts This is the replacement for Spark
There will be a Google account assigned to each room and you will be able to use hangouts to message the stockroom Just log into the Google account and click hangouts from the selection menu

19 What if my student is not on the Roster?
Make sure the student is in the right room. If student is waitlisted for your section have them complete the safety training and legibly write “waitlist” on the top of their compliance form. Have them fill out compliance & medical forms. Write “waitlisted” on the form if waitlisted Write what section they are supposed to be in if it’s a make up Do not exceed the capacity of the room Have the students not on the roster leave the lab before checking into lab drawers. 19 19 19

20 Safety Training Makeups

21 Common Compliance Form Errors
Student didn’t write their name on plagiarism policy Student checked boxes instead of initialing Student used pencil instead of pen TA didn’t write TA name on compliance form Student didn’t initial billing bullet TA wrote the wrong section TA didn’t sign and date the compliance form Didn’t mark if student was waitlisted Students do not understand the terms of the compliance and plagiarism forms 21 21

22 22 22

23 Note: Unpaid bills will result in a hold on e-Campus and bills will be sent to student's every week! 23 23

24 Plagiarism Forms The Plagiarism form is on the back of the compliance form! Make sure the student reads and signs it. This is the department copy. The student’s copy of the Plagiarism form is blue and does NOT need to be handed in, that is for the student to read and keep. 24 24

25 Checking into Drawers Only assign drawers to students who are on the computer roster For student's compliance form who are not on your computer roster write “waitlisted” on the top or if it’s a “makeup” mark the correct section Have students check their drawer for completeness. This means take everything out and put back only what is on the equipment list. Leave extraneous equipment in the front of the room and the stockroom will remove it. 25 25 25

26 After Safety Training When finished: Collect the compliance forms
Ask students questions about the form contents to ensure that ALL students understand what they are signing / initialing Look over the completed compliance form before the student leaves lab. Make sure it is correct and complete! Immediately following class take ALL compliance forms to the stockroom.

27 Reporting M/B Equipment
If an item is found missing or broken within first 30min of Lab. CHM 102 and CHM 114 have 1 hour at the start of lab Due to the concept review Check to make sure item really is missing or broken Mark the item MISSING/BROKEN on the attendance program Send student to the stockroom immediately for a new item Ensure that they have done so In this situation the student will not be charged for said missing/broken item as they have not used equipment yet. If an item is found dirty, please have your student rinse it out with water. If it can't be cleaned, put it through as broken. Students should clean glassware when finished with experiment! * TA should check all communal equipment in the lab for breakage prior to the lab class. Be observant during your lab class and report any breakage of communal equipment to the Stockroom (provide the student name and ID # and item broken) 27 27 27

28 Avoiding Theft from Student Drawers
Inform CHM 226, 292 and 414 students that they “own” their drawer contents for the semester Rooms 102, 130, 135, 140, 145, 150, 155, 165 Remind all students to lock their drawers They will be held responsible for the contents of the drawers. All drawers have combination locks and students should be given the combination during check-in Combinations to all in-use drawers can be found in TA Book located in the TA drawer. * Please be discreet with these combinations 28 28 28

29 Student Safety Training
Students must complete an online safety quiz to demonstrate that they understand departmental safety policies Students will NOT be allowed to participate in lab until the safety quiz has been completed If it is not completed their name will be colored red on the attendance screen. Students may complete the safety quiz outside of the lab and then return to class once it has been completed 29

30 First Day Procedure

31 Stockroom Policies Stockroom Hours are 8am -5pm
If something is broken the TA should report the item via the online system and the student should immediately come to the stockroom to replace the item. The stockroom does not accept cash Remind students that cash is only used during your graduate student sale of the safety eyewear. A personal check can also be made out to the URI Chemistry Department Remind students to put money on their RAM account. See departmental policies or stockroom web page on how to do this Billing for broken/missing items will be posted via stockroom webpage and weekly s will be sent to the students Periodically show the bill list to the students Students receive a registration hold on their “e-campus account” if their bill(s) are not paid Students may also have bills from previous semesters of which they will receive an 31 31 31

32 Pop Quiz! How often will emails be sent to students about their bills?
Every week What's the latest a student can pay their bill before getting a hold on their account? End of the semester What is GHS and why is it important? Global Harmonization System because it is a Federal Regulation and is a global requirement. Where can you find the GHS symbols for a specific chemical in your lab? SDS book 32 32
