2 Rule #1: Common Sense You will be working with some chemicals that can be very dangerous if used incorrectly. It is very important to be safe in the lab. First and foremost, use common sense!

5 Leave you “stuff” by the door The only thing you should have at your lab bench is your lab notebook and something to write with.

8 Use Chemical Properly Return classroom reagents to their shelf when done weighing or pouring. Use care to prevent contamination: Never return chemicals to the bottles from which they came. Pour out only what you need. Never leave a reaction or heat source unattended!

9 Dispose of Chemicals Properly Chemicals should be disposed of properly in the disposal hood. - Read the labels carefully before pouring chemicals in bottles. - Solid waste goes in a bucket. - Broken glass should be put in the wastebasket. - NEVER pour anything down the drain without your instructor's permission

10 Accidents Happen: Clean them Up Never use cracked or chipped glassware. Clean up broken glass promptly and carefully. Tell your instructor if.... Any accidents occur. Any skin contact with chemicals occurs - wash with large volumes of water. Any chemical spills occur.

11 Clean up after Yourself Make sure reagent shelves are clean and organized: return all reagent bottles to their proper positions Clean balance areas - brush off balances. Clean any glassware & equipment used - return all materials from your lab drawer to their proper place. Clean lab benches. Make sure any trash is disposed of properly.
