Causes of the French and Indian War
Competition between the French and English over the fur trade in North America. Competition between the French and English over territory and rule over territory acquired in North America.

Important Things to Realize
There had been other conflicts between the English and French in the 1600s and the early 1700s. This was the last one. The war was not between French and Native Americans, as the name of it suggests. Rather, it was a war between the French and some Native American cultures against the British and some Native American groups. Native Americans took sides based on their relationship with either the French and English. The war in America was part of a larger conflict called the Seven Years War, where English and French troops were fighting in Europe.

Famous Points and Events
The English had twice as many troops as the French, but the French won most of the early battles. English colonists were not allowed to fight the war, as the English felt that their army was better equipped and experienced with warfare. If was only after things got desperate that the English began to spend more on troops and weapons.

English Colonists Get Involved
Seeing that they knew the land and were willing to help, English colonists were allowed to help the war effort. One English colonist who was involved in the conflict was George Washington. After English colonists became more involved, the English began winning the war.

The Treaty of Paris 1. Great Britain claimed all of North America east of the Mississippi River. 2. France gave the Louisiana Territory to Spain, who had helped France in the war. 3. Great Britain gave back territories to Spain and got Florida.

Results of the French and Indian War
Great Britain becomes the dominant power in North America. Greater communication between British colonies. Some British colonists gain valuable military experience. Native Americans lose a chance to possibly keep their land.

Events After the French and Indian War
A. Proclamation of – Colonists are not allowed to settle west of the Appalachian Mountains. B. The British government fell into debt due to its spending during the Seven Years War and the French and Indian War. It needed to find ways to raise money.
