2 Bell-Ringer What can you tell me about the history of Colorado? History can involve many different aspects: (entertainment, sports, wars/battles, settlers).

3 History of Colorado 1849 & 1850 Gold seekers heading west into California. Hence why San Francisco is the 49ers. Brought many settlers from territory of New Mexico. Gold success found in what is present day Cherry Creek. Gold rush largely responsible for Colorado statehood being achieved. Becomes a state on August 1, 1876.

4 Sand Creek Massacre The east coast wasn’t the only area experiencing conflict during the Civil War. W/ the Gold Rush, many settlers head west through Colorado---encounter many Native Americans. 700-man Colorado militia encounters small Cheyenne and Arapaho villages w/ U.S. Flag flying proudly. Flying U.S. flag symbolized unity and peace. Showed encountering U.S. forces they were not interested in their gold. Men leave the village hunting for buffalo.

5 Sand Creek Cont. Estimated 160 Native Americans die.
Around 50 Native Americans escape using the Platte River as a means to hide. 2/3’s of deaths reported were women and children. Those who were shot and killed were treated inhumanely. Initially viewed as brave, heroic win by U.S. government Later was investigated and reviewed…. John Chivington removed from duties. Helped lead to the endangerment of the Cheyenne tribe.

6 History of Colorado Sand Creek Massacre (November 29, 1864)
I saw the bodies of those lying there cut all to pieces, worse mutilated than any I ever saw before; the women cut all to pieces ... With knives; scalped; their brains knocked out; children two or three months old; all ages lying there, from sucking infants up to warriors ... By whom were they mutilated? By the United States troops ... —- John S. Smith, Congressional Testimony of Mr. John S. Smith, 1865[21] “Fingers and ears were cut off the bodies for the jewelry they carried. The body of White Antelope, lying solitarily in the creek bed, was a prime target. Besides scalping him the soldiers cut off his nose, ears, and testicles-the last for a tobacco pouch ...” —- Stan Hoig[22]
