The Enlightenment SCIENCE IS BORN! (1500’s-1700’s)

2 The Enlightenment science, logic and reason could answer questions and improve society. Scientific Revolution = Scientific method. Began to question the church. Reading other books than the bible. Disliked by the church leaders.

3 Heliocentric Theory The theory that the Earth, and other planets, revolve around the sun. Replaced the geocentric theory. (the sun and other planets revolved around the earth) Created by Nicolaus Copernicus (1543), made popular by Galileo Galilei (1632). Galileo went to court and spent the last 10 years of his life under house arrest for teaching ideas that contradict the church.

7 The First to use scientific method
Francis Bacon (England) – Urged scientists to make observations and perform experiments to find answers. Rene Descartes (France) – Used mathematics and logic to find answers. “I think, therefore I am.” Sir Isaac Newton (England) – created the 3 laws of motion. Clip

Microscope Mercury barometer (measures atmospheric pressure to help predict weather) Mercury thermometer (one by Gabriel Fahrenheit, one by Anders Celsius.) First study/dissection of human corpses. Vaccine – small pox
