1 Content Objectives: Identify location based on latitude and longitude coordinates. Compare the physical and political regions. Language Objective: Define latitude, longitude, Prime Meridian, and Equator.

2 Latitude and Longitude
Don’t forget to extend the Prime Meridian and the Equator to make two compasses for labeling your map with N, E, S, W Latitude and Longitude

3 Latitude and longitude work like a map grid, but on a global scale
Latitude and longitude work like a map grid, but on a global scale. These two sets of imaginary lines encircle the globe. Locations on these lines are stated in degrees (°). Latitude and Longitude coordinates are the best way to find exact location on the Earth. What are some other ways to locate places? Why do you think latitude and longitude are better ways to locate places?

4 Prime Meridian: starting point for measuring longitude
Prime Meridian: starting point for measuring longitude. It is labeled as 0⁰ and is a vertical line.

5 Longitude: Lines on a map used to measure distance east or west of the Prime Meridian

6 Equator: line of latitude that is the halfway point between the North and South Pole. It is labeled as 0⁰ and is a horizontal line.

7 Latitude: lines on a map used to measure distance north or south of the Equator

8

9 Latitude is 1st and Longitude is 2nd: Find: 35⁰ N, 120⁰ W
What state is it in?

10 I have more options for practice if you need them – just ask!
Digital practice for latitude and longitude is also linked on my teacher website if you need more help!
