1 FIBERS AND FABRICS FACS I

2 Fibers and Fabrics Why study Fibers and Fabrics?
Each fiber has different properties Each is cared for differently When you care for fibers and fabrics correctly, they will look better and last longer.

3 Fibers and Fabrics All fabrics are made from small hairlike fibers.
Fibers are twisted together to form yarns.

4 Fibers and Fabrics Yarns are then: Woven Knitted Pressed Into Fabrics

5 Fibers and Fabrics There are two types of fibers. Natural Man Made
Natural Fibers These fibers have been around since man began to wear clothes. There are two main types: Animal PLant

6 Fibers and Fabrics Natural Fibers Animal Fibers (protein fibers) Wool
Camel Hair Silk Other animal Fibers

7 Fibers and Fabrics

8 Fibers and Fabrics Plant (cellulosic fibers) Cotton Linen Ramie tencel

10 Fibers and Fabrics

11 Fibers and Fabrics Characteristics of Natural Fibers
Absorb moisture and allow air to reach the skin Warm in cool weather, cool in warm weather Will not melt when pressed Some require more care Some are expensive Collecting and processing them is time consuming and expensive May fade May mildew Some are eaten by moths

12 Fibers and Fabrics Characteristics of Manmade fibers
Made from raw materials - chemicals Do not occur in nature as fibers Were first made in 1910 to replace natural fibers Easy to care for Durable - do not wear out easily Resist wrinkling

13 Fibers and Fabrics 7. Hold pleats 8. Less absorbent
9. Do not adjust to temperature well 10. Hold greasy stains

14 Fibers and Fabrics Examples of manmade fibers; Rayon Rayon

15 Fibers and Fabrics 2. Nylon

16 Fibers and Fabrics 3. Acrylic 4. Acetate

17 Fibers and Fabrics 6. Spandex
Most manufactured fibers were created to replace or imitate natural fibers. Nylon, for example, resembles silk. Acrylic takes the place of wool in blankets and sweaters. They have the advantage - they are easy to care for.

18 Fibers and Fabrics Fabric Construction
There are several methods of creating fabric from yarn. Woven Fabric - weaving involves the interlacing of two yarns at right angles. 7&FORM=VRDGAR

19 Fibers and Fabrics Woven fabrics generally hold their shape better and are stronger than knits. They type of weave and the characteristics of the fiber determines the characteristics of the finished fabric. There are three basic weaves: Plain weave Twill weave Satin weave

20 Fibers and Fabrics Why do you think two fibers might be mixed before spinning and weaving? Another method of creating fabric is knitting. Knit fabrics are constructed by pulling loops of yarn through loops of yarn creating interlocking rows.

21 Fibers and Fabrics Other Construction Methods
Felt - fibers are heat bonded or glued and pressed to make fabric Bonded Fabrics - 2 fabrics are glued together Quilted - 2 fabrics are stitched together with fill in between

22 Fibers and Fabrics Color and Fabric Finishes
Fabric Finishes - any special treatment that change or improve the appearance, feel or performance of the fabric.

25 Fibers and Fabrics Daily Clothing Care
Clothes that are taken care of properly will look better and last longer. Daily Care Check the garment for stains The sooner you treat the stain, the more success you will have getting it out 2. Check to see if it needs minor repairs, and do the repairs 3. Is it clean enough to wear again or does it need washing? 4. Put it where it belongs

26 Fibers and Fabrics Keeping your clothes Clean Sort before you launder
Look at the care label on the garment and follow the instructions Sort the same colors together Whites and light colors together Darker colors together Sort by weight Heavy jeans are dark colored but would not be washed with a dark thin blouse Sort by lint There are lint givers like towels and things that collect lint - don’t wash them together! Amount of soil

27 Fibers and Fabrics After the laundry items are sorted, there is additional prep work to do. Empty all pockets Close all zippers Fasten velcro Some clothes are best washed inside out

28 Fibers and Fabrics After sorting and prepping, check for stains
Treat the stain as soon as possible Check the label of the stain removal product Tide stain brain app

29 Fibers and Fabrics Machine Washing
Washing machines are all different. You need to learn how the one you have works, but basic operations are pretty much the same. Select the water temperature Select the washer cycle Select the water level Start the machine Add laundry products according to your machine’s requirements Add the items to be washed

30 Fibers and Fabrics Hand Washing - some garments say “Hand Wash Only”
Drying Clothes -Check the care label and follow the manufacturer's instructions. They will tell you how to dry the item. Some selections might be Permanent press Machine dry, gentle cycle Other options Line dry Dry flat

31 Fibers and Fabrics Removing Wrinkles

32 Fibers and Fabrics Sometimes the label will say “Dry Clean Only”
The process is not actually “dry”.
