Hybrid Taxonomy A solution to create and maintain a shared Taxonomy between your On-Premises farm and your SharePoint Online tenant Terms, Term Sets, and Groups are available across environments Update taxonomy terms in SharePoint Online and changes automatically propagate across all of your site collections and lists irrespective of online or on-Premises environments Local terms (site specific) remain local and are not replicated You control which term groups are shared between On-Premises and SharePoint Online: you can choose to keep some term groups as On-Premises only or SharePoint only

Hybrid Taxonomy Shared Taxonomy is mastered in SharePoint Online, On-Premises maintains a read-only replica The unit of replication is the Term Group – for each global Group you can choose whether to replicate it or not A timer job runs in the On-Premises farm which periodically polls for changes from SharePoint Online You can force a poll with the “Run now” command in the timer job Changed terms, term sets, and groups are replicated by the timer job (resource efficient & idempotent) Compatible with 3rd party enterprise metadata management systems – set your workflow to import into SharePoint Online, and changes will be propagated to On-Premises

Hybrid Taxonomy This feature is available in both SharePoint 2013 & SharePoint 2016. November 2016 PU or higher build for both versions of SharePoint is required for this feature The Farm Account must be configured as a Term Store Admin As with the rest of the Feature Pack 1 Features, we will be releasing Hybrid Taxonomy to TAP customers, before it is available to the general public.

Hybrid Taxonomy –Migrate terms
If you have terms in your On-Premises Taxonomy that you would like to be shared across premises, you will need to migrate them to your SharePoint Online tenant before setting up Hybrid Taxonomy. Migration of existing terms from On-Premises environment can be done using Copy-SPTaxonomyGroups PowerShell Cmdlet from your OnPremises farm. Migration of terms is optional, and can be done at a later date (as long as there are no conflicts in the data in the two term stores).
