1 New SharePoint 2016 Features
Office 365 Groups 9/9/2015

2 SharePoint 2016

3 SharePoint 2016 SharePoint 2013 is the foundational block of Office 365’s SharePoint Online. Microsoft took a snapshot of O365, removed online only features, and turned into the SharePoint 2016 on-premises product. Moving towards Cloud based identity management, but all existing identity management scenarios are still supported.

4 SharePoint 2016 Requirements
Hardware Requirements Memory Processor Disk Single Server 16-24 x64; 1x4 80 GB Farm Server 12-16 Software Requirements Windows Server 2012 R2 or Windows Server vNext Technical Preview 64-bit edition of Microsoft SQL Server 2014 SP1 or Latest version of Microsoft SQL Server (2016)

5 SharePoint 2016 Requirements
Windows Server AppFabric 1.1 Security Token Cache Social Feeds Cache Most Recently Updated Information Windows team discontinued the feature. SharePoint team will continue to support it for SP2013 & SP2016 Installation on a Domain Controller – supported for development “Standalone” edition no longer supported Dynamic Memory on VMs unsupported

6 SharePoint 2016 Upgrade & Migration
Create a new SharePoint 2016 Farm Attach the SharePoint 2013 content databases on the new SharePoint 2016 Farm Site Collections that are running in SP2010 mode on SP2013 need to be upgraded to SP2013 BEFORE the content database is attached to SP2016. No direct upgrade from SharePoint 2010 to SharePoint Must go through SharePoint 2013 to get to SharePoint 2016

7 SharePoint 2016 - MinRoles Provision a new server quickly
Specify the role of a server – relevant services are then defined by Microsoft for that role. Health Analyzer now flags non-compliance with recommended services vs. MinRole definitions.

8 SharePoint 2016 – Operational Enhancements
0 down time patching Upgrade process has been improved to update the system as it’s running. Old way – services (i.e. the Timer Service; IIS) were shut down and restarted. Fast Site Creation Creating a site takes a long time Feature activation algorithm Changed to a database row copy of the site template Reduces the time until the site is available User Profile Service FIM no longer built into the product(!!) Sync from SharePoint to AD has been removed. One way sync from AD to SharePoint will be supported OOB. Will allow integration to a stand-alone Identity Manager server for bi-directional sync Project Server Content will now be stored in SharePoint content databases Durable Links Urls to SharePoint files and items will have resource ids. If you move or rename the resource to another location, SharePoint will find it and display it

16 Office 365 Groups

17 Office 365 Groups Brings together people, information, and apps across Office 365, to enable better communication and collaboration Public View by Default is a key consideration governance point with Groups. Public Sites by Default has been a governance decision when implementing team sites. Microsoft's tooling leans to Public by Default - the way to make information discoverable through search and the office graphs. Think about it this way - if you keep information locked up by defaulting to private sites by default, relevant information won't be surfaced through the results page, because most users won't have access to the private information. You *can* change to private by default, but it's probably better to configure the groups (or sites) to private as necessary, and embrace the public by default. Able to create groups while leveraging Azure AD The idea is that the groups will self govern themselves Group are the core thing across the suite. A SharePoint site would then be created to be associated with the group.

23 Office 365 Groups – From Yammer
Note the Groups on the left of the Yammer page - this will follow the user across the suite. The product team has noted that successful Yammer implementations use the tool in a collaboration mode and invite external users in. Eventually a Yammer Group will trigger the Creation of an Office 365 Group. Group API will exist. The content in a group goes out of use rather quickly, but other groups don't. Guidance: How to use OneDrive vs. Team Sites. One Drive is where you put your files and Team site where you store your team's presence. A team site is a higher order thing than OneDrive.
