In Europe, the centuries after the fall of Rome are called the Middle Ages, which lasted from about 500 to 1350. During this time, Western Europe passed through two distinct phases: the early Middle Ages, lasting from about 500 to 1050 the late Middle Ages, lasting from about 1050 to 1350.

6 Germanic Kingdoms Germanic tribes that conquered parts of the Roman empire included the Goths, Vandals, Saxons, and Franks. Their culture was very different from that of the Romans. Charlemagne was a fierce warrior, strong ruler, and pious Christian. He also worked to promote learning throughout his kingdom. o Carolingian Renaissance revived interest in the works of the Greeks and the Romans. o Monasteries played a central role in the cultural renewal. o Monks copied work of classic Roman/Greek authors
