2 Key terms Knight- a man who received honor and land in exchange for serving a lord as a soldier Middle Ages- the years between ancient and modern times Medieval- referring to the Middle Ages Feudalism- a system in which land was owned by kings or lords but held by vassals in return for their loyalty Manor- a large estate, often including farms and a village, ruled by a lord Serf- a farm worker considered part of the manor on which he or she worked

4 Collapse of the Roman Empire
Rome Empire was the Center of Europe for a long time. It spread its culture, Latin language, and Christianity all over Europe. It however grew very weak. When it fell altogether, Europe was left with small kingdoms. No one knew what to do!!

5 Fall of the Roman Empire

6 Charlemagne Charlemagne a French military leader became King of the Franks. At the time the many small kingdoms were at war with one another. Charlemagne conquered these small kingdoms one at a time. He united all the small kingdoms and worked hard to establish order. After he died, his kingdom was split up into 3 areas for his 3 sons. His sons fought a lot and weaken what Charlemagne had.

8 Vikings The Vikings came from North Europe
The were skilled sailors and warriors. The attacked Charlemagne Kingdom for 300 years With doing so, they opened the trade routes to the Mediterranean lands and beyond.

10 Feudalism When Charlemagne died, Europe was again divided into small kingdoms. Feudalism is the name given to the government system that followed. In each Kingdom land was owned by the king but held by a vassal in return for their loyalty. Power belonged to those who controlled the land. These landowners were nobles. They would also share their land called a fief to their vassals.

11 Feudalism Duties Lords- protect and treat their vassals with honor.
Vassals- raise and lead armies that would fight for their lord. Many vassals were knights.

12 Manor System A large area that included farm fields, pastures, and often an entire village. It also included a manor house where the lord lived. Manors had to be self sufficient because they were far from towns. A lord also depended on the wealth of his manor. He was also the judge and decided who would oversee the farming and other daily work.

13 Manor System

14 Peasants and Serfs They are the people who made their living as farmers. They were tied to the manor. Peasants were very poor. Most lived in a one room house.
