1 PC Parts Worksheet- Building Your own Computer

2 Part 1-Parts of a PC(20 marks)
DVD - Digital Video Disc Secondary storage - An auxiliary storage device Primary Storage - Main storage Monitor - A computer or a television of screen Keyboard - A panel of keys that operate a computer or typewriter or a set of keys on a piano or similar musical instrument Scanner - A device that scans documents and converts them into digital data Graphics Tablet - An input device consisting of a flat, pressure-sensitive pad that the user draws on or points at with a special stylus, to guide a pointer displayed on the screen Laser Printer - A printer, linked to a computer, producing good-quality printed material by using a laser to form a pattern of electrostatically charged dots on a light-sensitive drum, which attract toner

3 Mouse - Use a mouse to move a cursor on a computer screen
Hard Drive - A high-capacity, self-contained storage device containing a read-write mechanism plus one or more hard disks, inside a sealed unit. Also called hard disk drive Sound card - A device that can be slotted into a computer to allow the use of audio components for multimedia applications Power Supply - A component that supplies power to at least one electric load CD-ROM drive - Identical in appearance to audio CDs, and data are stored and retrieved in a very similar manner (only differing from audio CDs in the standards used to store the data) BIOS - A set of computer instructions in firmware that control input and output operations Motherboard - A printed circuit board containing the principal components of a computer or other device, with connectors into which other circuit boards can be slotted

4 Network Card - A computer hardware component that allows a computer to connect to a network
RAM - An uncastrated male sheep Flash Drive - A small electronic device containing flash memory that is used for storing data or transferring it to or from a computer, digital camera, etc. Video Graphics Card - A video card connects to the motherboard of a computer system and generates output images to display. Video cards are also referred to as graphics cards. Video cards include a processing unit, memory, a cooling mechanism and connections to a display device. ROM - Computer memory in which program instructions, operating procedures, or other data are permanently stored, generally on electronic chips during manufacture, and that ordinarily cannot be changed by the user

5 List four external components you can see on the PC in front of you and describe the basic function of each one. (4 marks) -Monitor- The monitor is composed of a case and a screen that displays the information. -Laser printer- Laser printers allow users to print documents with crisp, clear text and vibrant images. These handy machines feature high resolutions, and some can reproduce images on photo paper with exceptional clarity and detail. -speakers- The function of a speaker is to amplify the sound of an iPod or music player so that it can be used for social uses or personal use. -Digital Camera- A digital camera will save the picture onto a flash memory card instead of on a photosensitive paper (film) that would need to be developed (which is how a regular camera works.)

6 Inside of the case are internal components
Inside of the case are internal components. List six internal components and describe the basic function of each one. (6 marks) -keyboard- The keyboard is used to type text and numbers into a word processor, text editor or other program. In a modern computer, the interpretation of keypresses is generally left to the soft ware. -Scanner- A scanner is a digital device that converts films, documents and photographic prints to digital images. -Mouse- The function of the mouse on a computer is to help in navigation through the various windows. Laptops have an on-board mouse but desktops use external mouse's. -Graphic tablet- A Graphics Tablet is a tablet (that comes with a pen) that connects to your Computer (usually with a USB) and allows your drawing to appear on the screen.

7 Inside of the case are internal components
Inside of the case are internal components. List six internal components and describe the basic function of each one. (6 marks) -Touch screen- A touchscreen is an input device normally layered on the top of an electronic visual display of an information processing system. -Webcam- They serve a variety of purposes, from taking still images to sending a live video over conference calls.

8 List seven common communication ports
List seven common communication ports. Describe the appearance and common uses of each one. (7 marks) 1.

9 Explain what a byte, mega byte, and a gigabyte are
Explain what a byte, mega byte, and a gigabyte are. Fill in the chart below with the proper information. (7 marks) Byte - A group of binary digits or bits (usually eight) operated on as a unit. Megabyte – A unit of information equal to 220 bytes or, loosely, one million bytes. Gigabyte - A unit of information equal to one billion (109) or, strictly, 230 bytes. Byte 8 Bytes = 64 Bits KB 1 kilobyte = 1000 Bytes MB Megabyte = 1e+6 Bytes GB Gigabyte = 1e+9 Bytes
