1 Why are there so many Churches?
To understand that there are different Christian Churches. To know what caused the Great Schism.

5 The Great Schism The Christian church split into 2 churches
Roman Catholic Believed the Pope was the only person in charge of the Church. They believed that the Holy Spirit came from the Father and the Son. They believed that priests should be celibate. Greek Orthodox Believed the Pope should not have the only authority. They believed that the Holy Spirit came only from the Father. Priests could be married. Pope Leo IX You are excommunicated! 6 The Great Schism Read “What was the Great Schism?”
What two things caused the Great Schism? What were the names of the two denominations created by the Great Schism? Where were the two Churches based? Who do you think was right and why? Do you think the splits in the Church were a good thing? Explain your answer.

7 HOMEWORK Research sheet on Martin Luther.
This will help us with next lesson looking at the Reformation Due next Tuesday.
