1 Accelerator Operations Department Readiness (Part 2)
Mike Stanek Accelerator Systems Division, Deputy Operations Department head 14-Mar-2007

2 Operations is ready for LCLS Injector Commissioning…
Operations Documentation and Training systems are mature, established, and proven. Required LCLS documention and training have been identified. Development of new required documents is complete (and continues to evolve.) For LCLS Injector Commissioning, we have integrated new documents into an existing system. Same approach was used for commissioning PEPII

3 Roles and Responsibilities of Ops personnel are established.
Ops manpower is committed to support LCLS Injector Commissioning plan.

4 Operations Dept “owns” the required documents.
Documentation Operations Dept “owns” the required documents. Developed with input from LCLS system designers and engineers Approvals: Ops managers and Accelerator Division Safety Officer (also co-author for some documents)

5 Status of Required Documents
LCLS Required Documents List has been generated by OPS, AD Safety Officer. Completed, verified, and released

6 Example: LCLS Search Procedure:

7 Operator Training to the LCLS Documents
Safety systems – Training must be in place prior to operation! (as with any SLAC PPS) PPS Certification Workbooks 1. Reading the Applicable Documents 2. Operating the PPS Controls 3. Searching the PPS Zone 4. Performing a Safety Inspection 5. Checking the PPS Interlocks 6. Trainer & Supervisor signoff Incident and Alarm response Beam Containment System Procedures

8 Example LCLS PPS Certification Workbook:

9 Specific Operations Dept. Training
Administrative Operations Directives – revised for LCLS – “Required Reading” sheet (complete). Technical system operation Primarily “On-the-Job”, will be learning along with the commissioning physicists. Accelerator systems that do NOT impact personnel safety are incorporated into the Ops training workbooks over time– with less formal treatment.

10 Training Record for PPS Operation

11 Operations Support of the Commissioning Plan
Roles and Responsibilities are defined in AD Operations Directives Engineering Operator in Charge Responsible for safe execution of the scheduled program (PEPII and LCLS) Supervises and directs Operators on shift Operators (3-4 per shift) One per shift assigned to assist LCLS Commissioning Safety responsibilities (Search, PPS Operation, alarm response, etc.) Technical support (pre-run checkout, assist Commissioning team with measurements, tuning) Accelerator Dept Safety Officer

12 Beam Authorization Sheet
Establishes Radiation protection conditions required to allow beam operation for each part of the accelerator. Includes Pre-run checks, Running conditions, Initial checkout (surveys and calibration) Radiation Physicist and AD Safety Office are co-authors EOIC is responsible for insuring conditions are met. Review and sign every shift LCLS Injector will have a BAS for commissioning Draft under review. It will be released to the EOIC when approval signatures are obtained from Radiation Physics, ADSO, and Head of Operations.

13 BAS - DRAFT

14 Work Control and Authorization
Configuration control of required safety envelope devices. Work authorization is by Area Manager Reports to Accelerator Division management. Supports EOIC in controlling maintenance and repair work. Initiates Work Control forms, which triggers safety review, mitigation requirements, approvals eg. Radiation Safety Work Control Form (ADSO, Rad Physics)

15 Work Control (cont) Maintenance and repair work is tracked through a computer-based system (ARTEMIS). This system has built in “work control”, ISMS, and approval features. It has been modified for LCLS Injector system problem entries. Work on all SLAC Accelerator systems is subject to these controls. LCLS Injector fits in to the existing systems.
