1 Cold War 2. Containment Policy- Truman created measures to prevent any extension of communist rule to other countries. 1. Potsdam Conference- A conference that included, Truman, Attlee, and Stalin to discuss the Soviets holding free elections in Poland.

2 Cold War 4. Marshall Plan- a U.S. plan provided aid to all European nations that needed it and to stop the Communist party from growing in Europe. 3. Truman Doctrine- a U.S. policy providing economic and military aid to free nations (non-communist) threatened by internal or external opponents.

6. Korean War- On June 25, 1950, North Korean forces swept across the 38th parallel in a surprise attack on South Korea. 5. North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) - Western European nations join with the US and Canada to form a defensive military alliance to stop Soviet aggression.

The U.S. would defend the Middle East against an attack by any communist country. 9. Warsaw Pact- A military alliance formed in 1955 by the Soviet Union and its Eastern European satellites; formed because West Germany was allowed to rearm and join NATO.

6 Cold War 11. Bay of Pigs- was an unsuccessful attempt by United States-backed Cuban exiles to overthrow the government of the Cuban dictator Fidel Castro. 12. Cuban Missile Crisis- was the closest the world ever came to nuclear war. However, due to President John F. Kennedy and Premier Nikita Khrushchev, war was averted.

7 Cold War 14. Tonkin Gulf Resolution-
A resolution adopted by congress in 1964, giving the president broad powers to wage war in Vietnam. 13. Vietnam War- The longest war in which the United States took part. The war began in 1954 and ended in Communist-ruled North Vietnam wanted to end U.S. support of the noncommunist South Vietnam and to unite the north and south into a single nation. The United States and the South Vietnamese army tried to stop them.

8 Cold War 15. War Powers Act- A law enacted in 1973, limiting a president’s right to send troops into battle without consulting Congress. them.
