4 What is imperialism? The policy in which stronger nations extend their political, cultural or military control over weaker territories

Colonial regions- Asia and Africa

7 Why? Industrial revolution gave Europeans the resources and technology to dominate other countries 1800’s European powers competed to claim; Africa, Southwest Asia, India and the Pacific Imperialists regarded each of their colonies as captive markets, sources of raw materials and cheap labor Europeans truly believed they were better

8 America annexation of Hawaii
Americas interest in Hawaii began in the 1820’s America had a strong foothold with sugar cane trade McKinley Tariff- places tariff on Hawaii- which raised import rates of foreign sugar Queen Liliuokalani- determined to rid Hawaii of foreign influence Hawaiian sugar planter stage a rebellion against the queen and went to America for military assistance American Marines stormed Hawaii Queen Liliuokalani was overthrown Hawaii is officially annexed in 1893

9 Forms of Colonial Control
Colony- country or territory that is governed internally by a foreign power Ex: Britain/India Protectorate- Country or territory with its own internal government but under control of an outside power Ex :France/Vietnam Sphere of Influence- Area in which outside power claims exclusive investment or trading privileges Ex: Britain/ Hong Kong Economic Imperialism- Independent less developed country is controlled by a private business rather than other governments Ex: America/ Philippines

Each person will participate and complete the activity Group effort/work together

11 Activity Stations Bring a piece of paper and a pencil to each station
Directions will be on the blue paper Work with your group Each station will have a 15 minute time limit
