2 Purpose of PowerPoint Make-up work assignment.
For any students who have missed multiple days or students who are missing their first notebook check. Complete all of the bell work assignments that you currently do not have completed. For those making up the missing notebook check, you only need to complete up to September 1st You need to keep in mind, however, that up to October 13th will be expected for the next notebook check. Turn them in to Mr. Greene for a grade by October 13th (Friday). Reminder days with two dates are block schedule days.

Answer the following questions in complete sentences in your notebook (if you do not yet have your notebook, answer them on your own sheet of paper. Keep this sheet of paper. Who was the first European to discover America? What country did he sail for?

What were conditions like for the Africans during the Middle Passage?

9 August 24th and 25th What was the African Diaspora?
What was the purpose of branding the slaves?

10 August 28th What were the slave codes?
Explain the difference between an indentured servant and a slave?

Answer the following two questions on the video What crop allowed for Jamestown to earn a lot of money? What did some of the first slaves to Jamestown eventually go on to own?

12 August 30th State two similarities and two differences between the Middle and Southern English colonies. Why were the Middle Colonies referred to as the Bread Basket? What crop was grown in the Jamestown that became America’s biggest export for over a hundred years? Hint (use the PowerPoint New England, Middle, and Southern Colonies August 28th to September 1st.)

17 September 19th Encomienda System – It gave Spanish settlers the right to tax Native Americans or make them work. In exchange, the settlers were supposed to convert the Natives to Christianity. Middle Passage – voyage African slaves endured across the Atlantic African Diaspora – the dispersal or spread of the African people around the world Jamestown – first permanent English settlement in New World Slave codes – laws to control slaves Immigrants – people who have left the country of their birth to live in another country Staple crops – crops that are always needed (important food to our diets)
