4 1400-1625 European Exploration Spain: SE – Settled St. Augustine Fl. Destroyed French fort: Carolina. Built forts for protection. SW – New Mexico area for mining gold/silver. W – Didn’t want anyone in CA to interfere with trade-Began colonizing. Missionaries – Sent out to teach & convert Native Americans. England: Jamestown – 1 st permanent English settlement for Tobacco, 1616. Roanoke a failure. Looking for Northwestern passage to Asia. Privateers raided Spanish ships and forts. France: 1 st successful French colony in Quebec 1608. Settled St. Lawrence River & Great Lakes Region. Fur Traders.

5 1400-1625 Comparing Reasons for Exploration Search for New Trade Routes and Riches  All initially wanted to find a passage from Europe to Asia  Spain-Gold/Silver  France-Fur  English-Tobacco Both  Both led to violence between European groups and Native Americans.  Europeans also brought diseases to the Americas, killing many Native Americans Colonization and Spread of Religion  Spain-Catholic  English- Protestants  Puritans- Wanted a more pure church.  Separatists- Separated from the church of England.

Comparing Colonization and Economic Development New England Col.: Escape Rel. persecution, trade, fishing, Puritans. Econ. Act: Fishing, lumber, shipbuilding, triangular trade, whaling. Middle Col.: Expansion, trade, Quakers, Rel. Tolerance. Econ. Act: Wheat, furs, sugar, distilling, shipbuilding, lumber. Southern Col.: Gold, Outpost vs. Spain, Catholicism, Settlement for debtors & farmers. Econ. Act: Tobacco, Rice, Indigo, Ship supplies.
