MORPHOLOGY TYPES OF MORPHEME (ROOTS, AFFIXES, STEMS, BASES) Morphology is the study of word

ROOT (FREE MORPHEME) A root is irreducible core of a word, with absolutely nothing else attached to it. example : walk, run, book, potato, cucumber Roots which are capable of standing independently are called free morpheme.

3 While only root cam be free morpheme, not all roots are free
While only root cam be free morpheme, not all roots are free. Roots are not capable of standing alone called Bound Morpheme. example : -mit  permit, submit, remit, commit, admit -ceive receive, perceive, conceive -pred predator, predatory, prediction,

4 Affix An affix is a morpheme which only occurs when attached to some other moepheme such root, stem, base. prefix  re-read, un-tidy, un-kind suffixe  quickly, walk-ed, book-s, walk-er infix (rere in English) –cub- , incubus, incubate, concubine,

5 Stem and Base Stem Part of the word that is existence before any inflectional affixes (Plural/Singular/tense) example Noun Stem Plural Book -s Worker etc

6 Base any unit which affixes of any kind can be added. the affixes attached base could be inflectional or derivational affixes. example boy  boys/ boyish all roots are bases. Bases are called stem only in the context of inflectional morphology.
