3 THE CWR NSAP CONCEPT: global policy context
CBD, ITPGRFA, Second GPA: Underline the commitment of governments to ensuring that the conservation and sustainable use of PGRFA continues to be a key element in global efforts to increase food security and nutrition, and to alleviate poverty Highlight the need to develop and implement national strategies for PGRFA conservation and sustainable use Joint notification of the CBD/ITPGRFA/CGRFA/Bioversity (3 August 2015) – ‘Strengthening the in situ conservation of PGRFA through incorporation of CWR under areas important for biodiversity in PA networks and other effective area-based conservation measures’ (

4 THE CWR NSAP CONCEPT: purpose
Raise awareness of the value of national CWR diversity for food and economic security, particularly for adapting crops to the impacts of climate change Define the specific actions and resources required to effectively conserve and sustainably utilize national CWR diversity Provide a framework and roadmap for long-term conservation and sustainable use of CWR Contribute to regional and global efforts in CWR conservation and sustainable use The aim is to prevent the loss of CWR diversity and maximize its availability for crop improvement

5 THE CWR NSAP CONCEPT: elements
National agricultural and floristic diversity National CWR diversity Define concrete actions for conservation and use of CWR Stakeholder collaboration Monitoring and review Important CWR taxa Ex situ conservation programme Pre-breeding, local communities, public awareness Sites for active in situ conservation CONCRETE ACTIONS for conservation & sustainable use of CWR

6 THE CWR NSAP CONCEPT: implementation
Strategic actions Policy interventions to enable concrete actions Provide the enabling conditions and necessary incentives to achieve NSAP objectives

7 THE CWR NSAP CONCEPT: implementation
Enabling environment Review existing policy Integrate CWR conservation into existing national, regional and global conservation and sustainable use initiatives Define lead agencies and stakeholder responsibilities Identify capacity building needs Develop communication strategy Sustainability: endorsement, financial support, stakeholder commitment

8 THE CWR NSAP CONCEPT: examples

9 Spain – complementary areas network for priority CWR
Complementarity areas selected to cover two thirds of all CWR species in the Spanish National Inventory for protection. Selection ranking order and number of additional species added to the network (in brackets) are presented for each site. Underlined and bold numbers tag those areas that are inside protected areas (PA). Number in red points out the first area selected according to the number of CWR species added to the network, but outside the Natura 2000 network of SCI. Pink numbers show areas partially overlapping with a PA and blue numbers point out areas less than 10 km away from a PA in Natura 2000 network. Rubio Teso et al. 2013

10 Finland – 5 proposed CWR in situ genetic reserves
Portugal – 9 complementary sites for 19 priority CWR 1 2 7 4 8 5 6 3 9 1 0 Fitzgerald 2013 Magos Brehm 2009

11 Jordan – complementary areas (grids and PAs) for top 100 priority taxa
Magos Brehm et al. 2014

12 Finland – collected CWR diversity vs
Finland – collected CWR diversity vs. existing diversity of priority CWR Fitzgerald 2013

13 Jordan – priority taxa not conserved ex situ
