3 The Battlefronts & Alliances
During World War I there was an Eastern Front & a Western Front The line where 2 armies meet is called a Battlefront. One army was the Allied Powers England, France, Russia, & Italy Italy had switched sides (didn’t like Austria) The other army was the Central Powers Austria-Hungary, Germany, Bulgaria, & the Ottoman Empire

4 Trench Warfare On the Western Front, both sides used extensive systems of trenches to protect themselves from their enemies A “No man’s land” separated the trenches Offensives involved charging across & attacking the enemy’s trenches With new technology the body count was extremely high

6 No Man’s Land

7 New Weapons of WWI Machine Gun Artillery Poison (Mustard) Gas Tanks
used in trenches and mounted on airplanes & tanks Artillery Large cannon that could fire shells great distances up to 10 miles. Poison (Mustard) Gas Gas artillery shells were fired at the trenches. Dangerous to both sides. Tanks used to break through the trench systems and “no man’s land”.

8 More Weapons Airplane Submarine (U-Boat) Zeppelin (Blimp)
