2 Three Types of Colonies
Charter license from the King manage and govern themselves Mass. Bay, Virginia Proprietary owned by one person Pennsylvania, Maryland Royal controlled by the Crown ruled by Royal governor 10 of 13 at time of the Revolution (NC)

3 Maryland One of the Chesapeake Colonies (with Va.)
Founded in 1634 by George Calvert (Lord Baltimore) as a haven for Catholics Toleration Act (1649)- first law to guarantee religious freedom

4 New York Settled in 1623 by the Dutch for trade with the Indians
Explored and Verrazano & Henry Hudson called New Holland

5 A Trading Center Albany was the main trading center
Main settlement at New Amsterdam on Manhattan Island Bought by Peter Minuit for $25 Very harsh treatment of Indians

6 The Ruling Class Dutch gave giant land grants in the Hudson Valley to anyone who paid for 50 colonists to migrate Called Patroons Became NY upper class Dominated economy & politics of NY for 300 years

7 British Take Over Captured by the British in 1664
Led by the Duke of York Future James II Became the colony of New York & New York City

8 Pennsylvania (Penn’s Woods)
Founded by William Penn as a haven for Quakers (Society of Friends) in 1681 Pacifists who were guided by an ”inner light” to follow their conscience Received a land grant from Charles II to repay a debt Recruited settlers with pamphlets Germans English Scots-Irish Free land & voting rights land

9 Pennsylvania Main settlement at Philadelphia Very prosperous
Became largest & most important city in the colonies Very prosperous Best farming in the Americas Penn. & Maryland called the “Bread Colonies” “the best poor man’s land in the world”

10 The Carolina’s Founded in 1663 by the 8 Lord Proprietors
Charter from Charles II Main settlement in Charlestown Free land for settlers Constitution written by John Locke Right to vote to all men

11 South Carolina Settled by English from Barbados
Prosperous growing and trading rice, indigo, & naval stores with the West Indies (sugar islands) One of wealthiest colonies Plantation economy large slave population formed most of the colony Separated from NC in 1729 Naval Stores- pine products

12 Georgia Founded in 1732 by James Oglethorpe
Haven for debtors A buffer to protect S.C. from Spanish in Florida Planned on a colony of small farmers (55 acres) but developed a plantation economy
