4 Introduction Artists use certain devices, deviation and figures of speech to make the language more effective. The literary artist while using the language takes liberty with it

5 Figures of speech as stylistic device
There are some stylistic device – Foregrounding Deviations Archaism Figures of speech Parallelism

6 Simile A figure of speech in which the similarity between two dissimilar objects has been explicitly stated with the help of ‘Like’ or ‘As’ .In a simile a comparison is made between two objects of different kinds which have however at least one point in common. Example: O my love’s like red-red rose That’s newly sprung in June.

7 Metaphor A Metaphor is an informal or implied simile in this figure of speech a similarity between two dissimilar objects has been suggested but not clearly stated with the help of ‘as’ or ‘like’. Example: There is a garden in her face Where rose and white lilies grow.

8 alliteration Alliteration is the repetition of the same sound or syllable of the beginning of two or more words in a line of a poem. It is a sound device and it is usually applied to consonants. It is used for giving emphasis on meaning. Example: Good things of day begin to drop and drowse.

9 Personification Personification is also common devices of comparison. It is special form of metaphor. In personification a non-human thing is referred to as having the characteristics of a human. Example: And the sunlight clasps the earth And moonbeams kiss the sea.

10 Hyperbole Wordsworths
Hyperbole is a deliberate use of exaggeration for the sake of emphasis. By using this figure things are represented as greater or less, better or worse, than they really are. This figure is also called Exaggeration. A statement can be made emphatic by overstatement. Such language is not meant to be taken literally. Example: “Ten Thousand I saw at a glance” Wordsworths
