Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome. A viral disease which affects the immune system, making infect persons susceptible to various diseases.
A stage of disease in which specific signs or symptoms of illness are not present.
Human Immunodeficiency Virus – the virus which is responsible for the disease syndrome known as AIDS.
A person who carries a pathogen (infective agent), such as a virus, but has no symptoms of the disease.

23. AIDS Facts Sheet
Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) is a communicable disease caused by a virus called HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus).
Acquired means that the virus can enter the body when infected body fluids come in contact with a break in the skin or mucous membrane. Infection can be prevented by avoiding risky behavior.
Immune means that the virus affects body’s immune system by invading white blood cells.
Deficiency means that when the virus invades the white blood cells, they are no longer able to protect the body against infections.
Syndrome means that the disease causes many symptoms and illnesses which, when considered together, indicate the presence of AIDS.
