1 AIDS Education Day 1 Today’s Activities: Goals:
Communicable vs. Non- Communicable brainstorming Video: HIV & AIDS: Staying Safe HIV/AIDS brainstorming Vocabulary List Question Box I can describe the differences between communicable and non- communicable diseases. I can recognize the relationship between the HIV virus and AIDS. I can recognize the effects of HIV on the immune system.

Let’s brainstorm the meaning of “Communicable” and “Non-Communicable” Please raise your hand, if you have a one-word description and will call and you and write your answer on our brainstorming paper. Do you think AIDS is a communicable or a non-communicable disease? Why?

As you watch the video be ready to discuss the following: A description of HIV and AIDS. Which disease category AIDS fits in. Ways HIV/AIDS is transmitted Ways HIV/AIDS is not transmitted.

5 Vocabulary List Today we will start building our vocabulary list for AIDS Education. Write the following words in your notebook and their definitions: Blood-borne: Communicable: Infection: Non-communicable: carried in the blood. transmitted from person to person. a condition caused by germs, such as viruses or bacteria. unable to be transmitted from one person to another.

6 Question Box Using the half sheet of paper, write down your questions to be placed in the Question Box. If you do not have a question, write down “I have no questions at this time.” I will collect your responses when we are all finished.

In your groups of 2 or 3: Compare your “What is AIDS?” answers to the “What is AIDS?” questions. Find the question that best fits your answers. As a class: We will go through each “What is AIDS” questions and determine the correct answers. If you have the correct answer you will place your answer with the question under the document camera.

15 Vocabulary List Let’s continue building our vocabulary list for AIDS Education. Write the following words in your notebook and their definitions: AIDS: Asymptomatic: HIV: Carrier: Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome. A viral disease which affects the immune system, making infect persons susceptible to various diseases. A stage of disease in which specific signs or symptoms of illness are not present. Human Immunodeficiency Virus – the virus which is responsible for the disease syndrome known as AIDS. A person who carries a pathogen (infective agent), such as a virus, but has no symptoms of the disease.

20 Questions Box Let’s discuss your questions from Day 1.
Using the half sheet of paper, write down other questions you may have. If you do not have a question, write down “I have no questions at this time.” I will collect your responses when we are all finished. Hand out the 3 X 5 cards and give students a few minutes to write their questions, collect cards, answer menstruation questions today, and answer the remaining questions on day 3. Use the Teacher Resource Packet, pages 5 – 7, to help address student questions.

23 AIDS Facts Sheet Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) is a communicable disease caused by a virus called HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus). Acquired means that the virus can enter the body when infected body fluids come in contact with a break in the skin or mucous membrane. Infection can be prevented by avoiding risky behavior. Immune means that the virus affects body’s immune system by invading white blood cells. Deficiency means that when the virus invades the white blood cells, they are no longer able to protect the body against infections. Syndrome means that the disease causes many symptoms and illnesses which, when considered together, indicate the presence of AIDS.

Write the following words in your notebook and their definitions: Abstinence: Fidelity: IV drug user: Marriage: Not participating in or indulging in something such as sexual intercourse. Mutually faithful relationship with only one continuing sex partner. People who inject drugs into their veins using needles. A contracted relationship between people which has been sanctioned by the state.

Write the following words in your notebook and their definitions: Monogamous: Risky behaviors: Sexual intercourse: A committed relationship between two people in which neither partner becomes sexually involved with anyone else. Actions which place one at risk or in danger People who inject drugs into their veins using needles. Sexual union of two people involving the insertion of the penis in the vagina.

28 Story Cards In your group of 5, read your Story Card and chose one solutions. Let me know your choice and your reason for your choice. When all groups are finished, I will share each groups choice.

29 AIDS: Post Test Use your Vocabulary List and AIDS Facts Sheet to complete the post test. When you are finished we will discuss your answers.
