1 Measurement “The most remarkable discovery ever made by a scientists was science itself.” Jacob Bronowski

2 Measurements Gives meaning to the observation
are expressed with numbers and units of measure. Examples: 25 yards 10 seconds 38 degrees Celsius 2,580 miles 20 kilometers

3 Instruments and what they measure
Meter stick (ruler) Length Triple Beam Balance (scale) Mass (weight) Thermometer Temperature Stopwatch Time Graduated Cylinder Volume

4 Scientific Communication
Most scientific studies and experiments use a standard system of units called “Le Systéme International d’Unités” or SI. Modern metric 10 is the base unit.

5 Length Distance between two points
Ex: 1.5 miles from HLMS to Rooster’s Units of length... Millimeter (mm), Centimeter (cm), Meter (m), Kilometer (km)

6 Mass The amount of matter in an object Units of mass
Ex: The rock has a mass of 23 grams Units of mass milligrams (mg), grams (g), kilograms (kg) Weight is a measure of the gravitational force on an object.

7 Would my weight change if I traveled to the Moon? Would my mass change?

8 Area Area is the amount of surface included within a set of boundaries. Expressed in square units of length (m2) A= Length x Width

9 Volume The amount of space that an object occupies
Ex: the pebble has a volume of 4 mL How is it found? Irregular objects.....with a graduated cylinder Regular objects By measuring

10 Irregular object Put water into cylinder measure volume of water
place object in cylinder re-measure volume of water subtract volumes Measured in milliliters (mL)

11 Example... Amount of water in Graduated Cylinder = 50 mL
Amount of water after pebble is placed in = 55 mL Volume of pebble = _____

12 Regular Objects L H W Measure: Length Width Height Calculate:
V= L x W x H (cm³) L H W

13 Example.... V = L x W x H = 4.0 x 3.2 x 12.3 = cm³
