4 Application terminology
Common App is a standardized application that most schools will accept: Early Decision allows applicants to submit applications early, but if accepted, the student is obligated to attend (You can only apply Early Decision to 1 school) Early Action allows the applicant to submit applications early, with no commitment of attending the school (You can apply Early Action to as many schools as you would like) Rolling Admission means colleges accept applications on an on-going basis Regular Admission is the latest date colleges will accept applications to be submitted

6 Application Process: Student Responsibilities
MINIMUM THREE WEEKS BEFORE THE APPLICATION DEADLINE. Create a Common Application account and link with Naviance. Update Naviance under “colleges I am applying to”. Complete & send college application(s). ****Students MUST inform Counselor when application is sent out. Request standardized test scores from Collegeboard or ACT Request letters of recommendation-teachers &/or counselor Once accepted, please update Naviance

7 Application Process: Pathways Responsibilities
School Counselors will mail or eDoc to the college: Transcripts (initial and final) Mid Year Transcript by request only School Reports Counselor letter of recommendation (if requested) Marking Period 1 Grades

8 Who sends what? The College or University Counselor sends:
Transcript Profile & SSR Counselor Rec. 1st Quarter grades Mid-Year & Final Grades Student sends: Application Fee Essay Resume Supplement (if required) SAT scores (collegeboard) Teacher sends: Recommendation (through Naviance)

9 Requesting Teacher Recommendations
Personally request teacher recommendations first-send request through Naviance Teachers are not obligated to write the recommendation- Do not take this courtesy for granted Give teachers at least a 3 week notice before the due date Provide teachers and counselors with a resume. WRITE A THANK YOU NOTE-they most likely wrote this on their own personal time Know what your schools require-do not send more than required-How many? Teachers or counselors?

10 College Rep Visits Students should make it a priority to visit with the admissions counselor of their prospective schools. Students need to sign up on Naviance at least 1 week prior to the visit & the college MUST be in “Colleges I’m Thinking About” or “Colleges I’m Applying To” Students will receive a pass the morning of the college visit and must communicate with teachers

11 Collegeboard Score Reports
If a student uses a fee waiver for the SAT they will also receive 4 fee waivers for college applications. Students MUST add in colleges to receive their scores, up to 9 days AFTER taking the test.

12 Important Testing Dates
SAT’s: October 1 (Register by September 20) November 5 (Register by October 25) ACT’s: October 22 (Register by September 16) December 10 (Register by November 4)

13 Ideas to Consider Stay organized: Keep a calendar & folder for each college Read instructions carefully & review spelling/punctuation Manage deadlines Make copies of everything, especially your confirmation page, and file in your folder Follow-up with schools to make sure they received ALL information needed to complete your application
