1 Interoperability Education and outreach activities
Why education is essential for interoperability success Giorgio Saio, GISIG Workshop “What in Interoperability and How Do We Measure It?”, June 27° 2011 INSPIRE 2011 Conference, Edinburgh

2 Training Needs Training is needed regarding the content and the topics subject of the new European Directives and Policies, such as INSPIRE, SEIS, GMES, WFD, etc Training is also needed to support European project development Training is needed about the new technologies related to access and management of Geographical Information, more and more popular, in and with a European dimension In such a context, GISIG is developing a line of action able to integrate various experiences and offer to its Members and the GI Community different training opportunities, according to a flexible and “interoperable” schema 2 2 2 2 2 2

3 Training and Interoperability
Training is a good gateway to access the interoperability concepts: At a conceptual level, for reasons of method, because it facilitates an inter-disciplinary approach pooling different competence and skill, as it is frequent and needed for effective interoperability between different databases and information sources At a practical level, for operational reasons, because technical interoperability needs specific knowledge about the different available tools and about their conversion/translation paths

10 Project Training Framework Schema

11 E- learning Platform (s)
Constitute the infrastructure(s) hosting the training modules and training material. Established by widely diffused open source e-learning tools. Open to the project members and (open registration) to the users Communities. Once subscribed to the Module (or Modules), the user is redirected to an e-learning platform with personalized access. Decentralised: Training Material is hosted in different platforms. Training material developed on a variety of formats: Presentations with voice, screencasts, plain text lectures, exercises, etc. Allows monitoring the user progress and students/ teachers interaction.

13 HUMBOLDT (GMES project)
HUMBOLDT (GMES project) Development of a Framework for Data Harmonisation and Service Integration Objective HUMBOLDT will contribute to the implementation of a European Spatial Data Infrastructure (ESDI) that integrates the diversity of spatial data available from the multitude of European organizations. To achieve this objective and to maximise the benefits gained from this integration, the requirements of INSPIRE, of GMES, of the environmental agencies and of other related activities in the EU will be met. © 2007 Humboldt Consortium   Fraunhoferstraße 5   64283 Darmstadt   13

17 Best Practice Network for SDI in Nature Conservation
(October 2008 – July 2011) The project contributes to the implementation of the INSPIRE Directive with targeted reference to the following cluster of data themes of the INSPIRE Annexes: Protected Sites (Annex I) Biogeographical regions (Annex III) Habitats and biotopes (Annex III) Species distribution (Annex III) Nature-SDIplus is a Best Practice Network co-funded by the European Commission under the eContentplus Programm. It is aimed at harmonising EU national datasets on nature conservation. Nature-SDIplus contributes to the implementation of the INSPIRE Directive with targeted reference to the following cluster of data themes of the INSPIRE Annexes: Protected sites (Annex I), Biogeographical regions (Annex III), Habitats and biotopes (Annex III), Species distribution (Annex III). eContentplus Programme Best Practice Network ECP NatureSDIplus 17 17

27 NESIS (ICT-PSP Thematic Network)
A Network to enhance a European Environmental Shared and Interoperable Information System To provide a coherent ICT roadmap for the SEIS implementation, with the consolidation of existing best practice. To promote the uptake of ICT solutions to address the fundamental problems faced by public authorities in providing information related to monitoring and reporting environmental data. To support a shared vision for streamlining current information and reporting systems and to promote the adoption of an interoperable information infrastructure 27

29 Learning paths and Training Actions
Learning paths customized according to the needs of users in a flexible way Possibility to build learning paths by using modules developed within different contexts (projects) or already existing courses Grouping users (classroom) to organize structured distance learning actions with a specific time table, also with the support of a discussion forum Organisation of workshops or teleconferences to present the training actions and assess the results
