6 Life Support Skills Personal Care Speaking Skills Interviewing Skills
Eligibility Forms STEM Premier! Life Support Skills Personal Care Speaking Skills Interviewing Skills Eligibility Forms will be submitted on STEM Premier this year for ILC. – Must be uploaded by May 15th, 2018 If you use STEM at the state level, competitors will only have to upload the form once (for your regional or state conference) They will not need to upload again for ILC If you don’t use STEM – they need to upload for ILC by May 15th. Need YOUR HELP PLEASE! We have removed the 5 bonus points Instead, in order to be recognized on stage at ILC the form must be submitted by May 15th on STEM – If its not submitted, the competitor wont go on stage We aren’t going to beg anymore for these – we either get it or we don’t and they don’t go on stage :) It takes us HOURS to track these forms coming into National HOSA (hopefully this year STEM will help with that process) But really, we only have 4 events with eligibility forms, you have 3 competitors per event = you only need to check 12 competitors Now since the forms are submitted through STEM Premier you will be able to login and see who has uploaded it, and compare to your registration list for these 12 competitors – and you can help us track down any that are missing by the deadline.

7 Medical Innovation – Existing Medical Innovation – Original
STEM Premier Events New Medical Innovation – Existing Medical Innovation – Original Clinical Specialty, Health Career Photography, Public Service Announcement, Researched Persuasive Writing and Speaking, MRC Partnership, Job Seeking Skills - In addition to the 4 special needs events on previous slide (so 12 total) New events added this year are both MI events where a 90 second video demonstration of the innovation will be required to be uploaded Process has been clarified. The guidelines now have detailed instructions for how to upload content to STEM Premier MI = video demonstration link uploaded CL = portfolio and skill video HCP = 3 photos PSA = link to PSA RPS = written paper MRC = Partnership Verification Form and portfolio JSS = cover letter and resume

8 Skill Events - Gloves Must be non-latex
In all event that require competitors to bring gloves – they must be non-latex

9 Points for Following Guidelines
Points for Following Guidelines has morphed over the years we are trying to make sure that if we say something can/can’t be done in the rules of the guidelines, that it is reflected in the rating sheet. Judges didn’t know how to score if these items were listed in the guidelines, but not reflected in the rating sheet. In numerous events this year you will see the “points for following guidelines” section has been updated. The section now has a higher points value (if we are asking competitors to do things a certain way, it is important they be done that way) The point value is approximately 30% of the total It is an ALL or NOTHING section. All items must be completed to receive the points. Giving it a point value put the process back in Tabs and takes away that complicated step previously of ”Those who do not meet it do not advance”

10 Round 1 / Round 2 Scoring Changes PSA RPS HCD HCP
Significant changes to these rating sheets regarding what is judged in round 1 vs. round 2 In the past we judged some items in both round 1 and round 2. Rating sheets have been updated to reflect judging each component only ONE time. Scores from round one will be added to scores from round two to get the finalists PSA = Round 1 judges PSA, Round 2 judges presentation (use to be PSA in round 1, then PSA again AND presentation in Round 2) RPS = Round 1 judges paper, Round 2 judges speech HCD = Round 1 judges the display, Round 2 judges the presentation HCP = Round 1 judges the photos and written narratives, Round 2 judges the presentation States: if you aren’t big enough to need a round 1/round 2 for elimination, you will need to use both rating sheets in competition. You could use the same judges for the content in round 1 and round 2 OR you could have one set of judges for round 1 content and one set of judges for round 2 content (like we do at ILC)

19 Outstanding HOSA Achievement
Special achievements, projects, events, and activities that are completed by and unique to individual chartered associations NEW recognition event – at the ILC level only, not the state level Submitted by May 15th by answering questions outlined in the guidelines and submitting a copy of documentation of the project (photos, descriptions, etc.) Example from MT = Higher than average suicide rates in the state so HOSA chapters did special projects throughout the year highlighting suicide prevention across the state Example from TN = Wearing your seatbelt campaign (a lot of chapters participated across the state.) Not something that is part of the National CE program, but a very important and worthwhile project --- we want to recognize states for these!

20 Terminology National Service Project = HOSA Service Project
Outstanding State Leader = Outstanding HOSA Leader As we continue to grow internationally, you will start to see some of our publications reflect this. ”States” or “Countries” will be referred to as “Chartered Associations” State and National being replaced with “HOSA” as appropriate. These two events still have their original event names – but be looking for an official name change next year. The terminology in the guidelines reflects both names this year.

21 Health Professions Events

34 Medical innovation Name change: Medical Innovation- Advancement is now Medical Innovation- Existing Video demo must be uploaded to STEM Premier Lots of changes in this event New name: Medical Innovation – Existing Guideline files are separated for each event now instead of being lumped into one event file: Medical Innovation – Original and Medical Innovation – Existing Teams choosing the Medical Innovation – Existing event, should plan to IMPROVE UPON, MODIFY, or UPDATE the existing innovation they select, not just present research A 90 second video demonstration of the innovation will need to be created and then uploaded to STEM Premier prior to May 15th for the ILC -- the guidelines have a link to a sample video demonstration Display max/min dimensions were also added Information about applying for a patent for competitor’s work was also added

35 Community Awareness Judge questions removed
Title page requirements changed Judge questions removed: - to align with HE event - and for timing and fairness between sections (some sections were getting great judge questions, others were not, could potentially effect score depending on questions asked)

36 Wait...there’s more!

37 Terminology State Chartered Association National HOSA / International
- The Board voted the terminology of “International” as we continue to grow and expand We are slowly moving away from state, to chartered association And National to HOSA where applicable National Service Project (HOSA Service Project) Outstanding State Leader (Outstanding HOSA Leader) New event = Outstanding HOSA Achievement, not Outstanding State Achievement You’ll see terminology reflected both way in the guidelines this year with the official name changes coming next year

38 Accommodations At ILC, HOSA will provide the same reasonable accommodation that you provided at the state level In the non-special needs events, if you have students who need an accommodation, you fill out the online form with the info by May 15th We will do what you do at the state level i.e.: If a state pays for an interpreter at SLC, then HOSA will pay for an interpret at the ILC…but if a school provides an interpreter for the student, then the school must provide an interpreter at the ILC.

39 CE Schedule at ILC Draft schedule Better Communication
CE takes place Wednesday at noon to Friday at 5:30pm Draft Schedule: We have always done our best to have a draft schedule for the conference planned by January so it can be released in draft format to you in the ILC Guide this means next week when I get home we already start placing events and scheduling the conference! We just cant account for all changes and all growth (ie: MI this year literally doubled in size! Had to make it work with an extra 180 competitors!) we typically account for event growth consistent with our membership growth plus some percentage points But things still change Better Communication from us: If we make a major change in the future (like SM this year that caused a few issues) you will get better communication from us about the change CE Schedule If your competitors want to ensure they will be there for all possible times with CE we run from Wednesday at 12:00 to Friday at 5:30.

40 Take a Guess How many test questions are in the HOSA test bank? 4,000
8,000 12,000 Test bank has over 12,000 items 35 events with a test At least 25% of the test questions are new every year Remaining 75%, questions are not used more frequently than once every 5 years We track in the test bank the year the question was used And State Advisors MUST agree not to give out state tests to anyone because of the test bank or they will not receive access to the “free” tests in future years.

41 Test data New Resources New editions of resources
Itemized analysis of questions Often more than 25% are new because of new resources and new editions New Resource When we have a new resource, all old questions are removed from the test bank New editions Every spring and summer we check all resources in all events to see if a new edition has been released The test bank and any skill rating sheets that use the resource are updated accordingly This year = 6 events updated test plans 10 updated resources 5 brand new resources Itemized Analysis For each test at ILC we get a test report Tells us which questions were missed most frequently, which distractors were selected, which questions every got right Update the test bank based on that analysis removing “poor” questions We analyze everything to try to ensure the tests and resources used continue to reflect what is being taught in the classroom. Trying to keep HOSA current and relevant!

42 Successfully Managing Your sponsored ILC event
State Event Sponsorship Assignments Personnel Yes, We REALLY need those names by May 1st! Communication Tips (thank you Lauren W!) State Event Sponsorship Assignments: - Will get preference form again this fall not announced until January again so we have time to look at draft agenda & which events will test together It is becoming the NORM to have more than one event test together in the same room – please help us prepare your staff. We are getting too big for every single event to have its own room – need to use larger ballrooms. Be prepared to work with other states Personnel: If your event has a round 1 and round 2– it may be beneficial to assign 2 sets of personnel to each round to avoid burnout. Try to keep the EM and QA consistent if possible. EM and QA positions are sooo important: assign your best people! We had more issues than normal this year with state personnel not showing up Set the expectation up front that they need to help May 1st deadline for EM and QA names submitted online Help us provide the best possible CE experience for your students by getting us these names by May 1st Communication Tips Set deadlines for ILC commitment: distribute a flier at SLC with those deadlines Create an online ILC form to gather the info you need regarding who’s going, where staying, arrival, departure, etc. Weekly s to the advisors with ILC details and commitments (changing the order of information, highlighting different content each time) Print and distribute advisor assignments again at ILC registration Remind 101 or Flocknote, group texting for changes on site

43 CE Report Thank you to our exceptional states this year
Alabama and South Carolina and West Virginia Test Scores How can we improve? Exceptional States Page 9: Overall best ratings and staff professionalism in the CE evals (VA, IO, Alaska, FL, HI, NC, TX) Alabama and South Carolina and West Virginia Thank you AL and SC! For managing KTs all in one big room (we know it was new this year) But this is the way of the future! WV has been doing this for years with HCIE Everyone should be prepared to share testing rooms in the future Test Scores Page 122: look at averages to see how your state compares to national average How does someone score at 4 at ILC? How did they qualify to get there? How Can we Improve Look at comments and scores of the event you sponsored What can we do better next time?

44 expectations Tight rooms Sharing space Multiple Sites
- Hotel space, competitor numbers, and timing in an event may differ year to year and from state to ILC. - It is important for you to continue to help ensure the expectations of the competitors so there are no surprises!
