Tell me about YOU. Understand the meaning of health, quality of life, aspects of health, and the health continuum.

3 Health The overall well-being of your body, your mind, and your relationships with other people. Life Expectancy The number of years a person can expect to live. Quality of Life The degree of overall satisfaction that a person gets from life. High quality of life can be a person’s goal. Goal Result that a person aims for and works hard to reach.

6 Aspects of Health To achieve a high quality of life, a person must work hard to improve all aspects of health. The aspects of health that are important to overall well-being are physical health, mental and emotional health, and social health.

7 Physical Health Physical health refers to how well your body functions. You are amazing Do you: Eat breakfast everyday? Exercise at least 3x/week? Drink at least 64 oz. of water/day and only 1-2 sodas/week? Eat at least 5 servings of fruits and vegetables/day? Sleep at least 7 hours/night? Eat healthy snacks? (low in sugar, sodium, fat) Avoid drugs, alcohol-harmful substances? Write 2 things you think you are doing for your physical health.

8 Mental and Emotional Health
The state of being comfortable with yourself, with others, and with your surroundings. Emotional health refers to how you react to events in your life. angry cat Do you: Feel alert? Learn from mistakes? Recognize achievements? Like yourself? Know how to deal with stress? Feel happy? Get angry a lot? Feel sad? Feel afraid? Take time to relax? Share your feelings with others? Ask for help when you need it? Serve others? use your words Write 2 things you think you are doing for your mental and emotional health.

Social Health How well you get along with others. Do you: Get along with and enjoy your family? Have some good friends? Be a good friend? Respect the rights of others? Give and accept help? Communicate your needs to others? Resolve conflicts? Compromise? Cooperate? Care? Be dependable? Be honest? Be kind? Listen? Good social health doesn’t just happen – you have to work at it. Write 2 things you think you are doing for your social health.

A continuum (kun TIN yoo um) is a gradual progression through many stages between one extreme and another. A Health Continuum One end of the continuum represents poor health (illness). The other end represents perfect, or ideal, health (wellness). Wellness is a state of high-level health. Movement Along the Continuum Many of the choices you make on a daily basis affect your position on the health continuum.
