1 Year 8 English exam

2 Structure of the exam The exam has 3 sections addressing key skill areas developed during English this year: Section A: Poetic Devices Section B: Grammar/Spelling Section C: Writing  

3 Section a: poetic devices
You will need to: Correctly identify the type of poetic device used in examples from The Ghost’s Child Explain the impact of these poetic devices in Hartnett’s writing

4 Section B: Spelling, grammar and punctuation
You will need to: Identify and correct the spelling of the incorrect word in sentences provided. Eg. The wale was swimming in the water: Answer: whale The words will come from the spelling list provided to you during revision

5 You will need to: * Identify and correct the punctuation errors in a written passage. Eg. The dogs bowl was empty. Correction: The dog’s bowl was empty *Identify parts of speech within a sentence. Eg. The pig rolled in the mud. Answer: Pig is a noun *Correct a passage so that tense is consistent. Eg. The dog walked out the door and jumps in the car. Correction: The dog walked out the door and jumped in the car. *Respond to multiple choice questions based on punctuation and sentence construction.

6 Section C: teel paragraph-the ghost’s child
You will be given a list of six topic sentences in the exam. You must choose one of these sentences as the topic sentence for your paragraph. You will not know what the topic sentences are beforehand. You may bring in a quote sheet - half a page of handwritten notes – to use during the exam.
