Day 1 Read p. 55-62 What are 5 things we can learn or infer about Charlie in this section? Personality? Intelligence? Social life? Each thing must be written out as a complete sentence. Bulleted lists will not receive any credit.

Day 2 Finish part 1, p. 63-71 List 3 ways in which Charlie and his life have changed since the surgery. Again, these must be complete sentences. GIVE SPECIFIC EXAMPLES FROM THE STORY! You do not need quotes, but you need to give specific places where we see the change. Incorrect: Charlie is smarter. Correct: Charlie is showing he is smarter by spelling things correctly and using correct punctuation.

Day 3 Write a paragraph about Charlie’s problem and his solution: What is his main problem when we meet him at the beginning of the story? What does he want, more than anything? What is the main thing he does in this story to try to solve the problem? Think about the plot of this story. Night school is not his solution in this story. How well does the solution work? Give specific examples from the text where we see it either work or not work. How does the solution cause different problems? Give at least one new problem that Charlie experiences with a specific example from the text.

Day 4 Read p. 73-78 What happened to Algernon? What do you think this means for Charlie? Why?

Day 5 Finish the story. Did Charlie end up getting what he wanted in the end? You have to answer yes OR no, even though you may agree with both answer. Give specific evidence to support your opinion. (At least 5 sentences)

Final Paragraph In your opinion, should Charlie have had the operation? Why or why not? YOU HAVE TO CHOOSE ONE SIDE! Give specific evidence to support your claim. You should have at least one word-for-word quote. Put the page number where you found the quote in parenthesis at the end of the quote. (“We are reading a very hard book.” (63) Your paragraph must be at least 7 complete sentences, with a topic sentence (Charlie should/should not have had the operation.) and concluding sentence (For all of these reasons, Charlie should/should not have had the operation.). Do not use the words you, I or me in this paragraph. Do not write I THINK!! Just say it like you know it’s the truth!!

Awakenings and “Flowers for Algernon” Write one paragraph (at least 5 sentences) comparing the 2 pieces: Which characters are similar? How are the problems/solutions similar? How are the outcomes similar? Write one paragraph (at least 5 sentences) contrasting the 2 pieces: Which characters are different? How are the problems/solutions different? How are the outcomes different? Write one paragraph (at least 5 sentences), explaining which you liked better, and why. Only in this paragraph may you use the words I and me. Do not use the word you. For all paragraphs, be sure to give specific examples and include topic and concluding sentences.
