3 What is feminism? A political and social movement that advocates or supports the rights and equality of women. These include: suffrage, birth control, abortion accessibility, equal pay, maternity leave, etc. What feminism is NOT: the belief that women are SUPERIOR to men; women only society; misandry – the hatred of men.

4 Famous Feminists Susan B. Anthony Abigail Adams Mary Wollstonecraft
bell hooks Simone de Beauvoir Gloria Steinem And many more!

5 1st Wave ’s Focused on property rights, the right to divorce, and the right to vote. Mostly led by white, upper-class women. No regard for women of other races. Suffrage  voting rights. 1920: women gain the right to vote in America.

6 2nd Wave ’s Women were beginning to enter the workforce, mostly part-time. The “Pill” is introduced to the market, making birth control accessible. Beginning “the Sexual Revolution,” women want rights to birth control, abortion, equal pay, protection against sexual harassment in the workplace. Divorce rates rise during this period. Equal Pay Act of 1963 is passed. Led in the beginning mostly by upper-class white women in the 60’s; 70’s black and Hispanic women begin to take charge in more racially focused issues like welfare, abortion rights, and large pay gap. 77 cents to the dollar (white) 60 cents to the dollar (black) 55 cents to the dollar (Hispanic)

7 3rd Wave (current) Mid1990’s-present
Sex positivity, women continue to fight for equal pay, maternity leave, taking control of their sexuality. “Slut Walks,” created to empower women in taking pride in their sex lives. “Rape Culture,” the systemic cultural belief in defending rapists, and blaming women for the crime committed against them. Feminists are torn on the issue of legalizing prostitution, porn industry, and sex work in general.

8 4th Wave? (Maybe) 2008-present?
Arguably occurring right now according to feminists online. Focusing on the fight for gender equality for LGBTQ women, fight against rape culture, portrayal of women in the media, and for transgendered bathrooms.

9 Bechdel Test The rules now known as the Bechdel test first appeared in 1985 in Alison Bechdel's comic strip Dykes To Watch Out For. In a strip titled "The Rule," two women discuss seeing a film and the black woman explains that she only goes to a movie if it satisfies the following requirements: The movie has to have at least two women in it, Who talk to each other, About something besides a man.

10 Criticisms of Feminism
Too “white, middle class” centered. Not focused on race issues or lower class issues affecting women of color. Radical feminists, few in number, advocating for separate society from men. Sometimes referred to as “feminazi.” “Men’s Rights” groups have sprung up as a response to “radical feminism.” Issues not addressed: paternity rights, women in combat, the draft, adoption rights, circumcision, and false rape allegations. #Meninism, created by Men’s Rights advocates.
