3  feminism  ˈ fem ə ˌ niz ə m  noun  The advocacy of women's rights on the grounds of political, social, and economic equality to men.

4  Yep. That’s it.  It gets a bad or negative connotation primarily because of vocal minorities.

5 - 1908-1986. - French Existentialist philosopher. - Magnum Opus, The Second Sex, contributed to modern feminism, psychology, and many social studies. - Wrote extensively on the concept of “The Other.”

7  So according to de Beauvoir women have historically needed to seize their own identity rather than simply be identified by not being a man.  Even the word ‘woman’ is derived from the word ‘man.’  Biblical origin/patriarchy.

8  1850’s until 1920  Almost exclusively focused on women’s right to vote and to own property.  Legal inequalities

9  WWII happens, feminism stagnates.  1960’s, second-wave starts. “Patriarchy” becomes a common term.  Focus is now on some legal issues (marriage rape, divorce law, etc.), but also societal issues (domestic violence, sexual assault, being unable to serve in the military, being passed over for jobs in favor of men, underrepresentation in media, etc.).

10  1990’s through the present.  Addresses the perceived failures of second-wave feminism.  Focuses on eliminating the opinions underlying social inequalities, primarily gender roles and stereotypes.  Focus is now expanded to include other groups negatively impacted by patriarchy, (primarily different racial/ethnic groups and LGBTQ community).  Includes the male perspective in the discussion.
