Technology acts a direct substitute, with no functional improvement
Atoms and Elements Open Brainpop and view “Atoms and Matter” video. The video will be stopped at times determined by the instructor and students will answer questions pertaining to the video. The students will be chosen by drawing popsicle sticks with their names on them. After viewing, the students will answer questions to the quiz, using the “Plicker” app for to check understanding. This task uses: Learning Objective(s): PS-M-A1 The student will investigate and understand that matter is anything that has mass and occurs as a solid, liquid, or a gas. Key concepts include: a) Atoms, elements, molecules, and compounds b) Mixtures, including solutions c) The effect of heat on states of matter SUBSTITUTION Technology acts a direct substitute, with no functional improvement Teacher Notes: Erik JI Watson Elementary Describe the structure of atoms and the electrical charge of protons, neutrons, and electrons (PS-M-A2). 5th grade- Science & Social Studies Special Directions: This can be completed as individuals, or in larger groups Activity Evaluation: If students miss 2 or more, they should review class notes, text, or flipchart of “Atoms and Elements” and then complete with fewer than 2 mistakes Prerequisites for students: Completed “Matter and it’s Properties” unit in 5th grade science curricula

a Atoms and Elements Students will complete the “Atoms and Elements” flip chart -found in Unit One- Grade Five –Science – Elementary Curriculum Blackboard- Calcasieu Parish Using the Promethean pen, students will then drag and drop the term onto the correct space on the chart: 3. Once all the spaces are correctly filled. The pen will be passed to the next group of students. This task uses: Learning Objective(s): PS-M-A1 The student will investigate and understand that matter is anything that has mass and occurs as a solid, liquid, or a gas. Key concepts include: a) Atoms, elements, molecules, and compounds b) Mixtures, including solutions c) The effect of heat on states of matter AUGMENTATION Technology acts as a direct tool substitute with functional improvement Teacher Notes: Erik JI Watson Elementary Describe the structure of atoms and the electrical charge of protons, neutrons, and electrons (PS-M-A2).

M Atoms and Elements Students will log on to Mr. Millslagle’s CPSB website under their usernames 2. The student will complete the “Atoms and Elements” activity and paste the activity into the discussion board. This will include The chemical formula of the atom you made using the Lego building bricks provided A picture of the atom The total atom count of the molecule 3. They will use the following chemical formulas of common molecules This task uses: Learning Objective(s): PS-M-A1 The student will investigate and understand that matter is anything that has mass and occurs as a solid, liquid, or a gas. Key concepts include: a) Atoms, elements, molecules, and compounds b) Mixtures, including solutions c) The effect of heat on states of matter MODIFICATION Technology allows for a significant task redesign. Teacher Notes: Erik JI Watson Elementary Describe the structure of atoms and the electrical charge of protons, neutrons, and electrons (PS-M-A2). 5th grade- Science & Social Studies Special Directions: This can be completed as individuals, or in larger groups Activity Evaluation: The activity will be evaluated using the rubric provided on the website Prerequisites for students: Completed “Matter and it’s Properties” unit in 5th grade science curricula

R Atoms and Elements Students will log on to Mr. Millslagle’s CPSB website under their usernames 2. The student will complete the “Atoms and Elements” activity and paste the activity into the discussion board. This will include The chemical formula of the atom you made using the Lego building bricks A picture of the atom The total atom count of the molecule The name of the atom using the list of molecules provided by the instructor 3. After they have completed this step the student will respond to another students post. The response will include: a)The name of a different molecule that they were able to complete using only the atoms used by the other student b) A picture of the new atom This task uses: Learning Objective(s): PS-M-A1 The student will investigate and understand that matter is anything that has mass and occurs as a solid, liquid, or a gas. Key concepts include: a) Atoms, elements, molecules, and compounds b) Mixtures, including solutions c) The effect of heat on states of matter REDEFINITION Technology allows for new tasks, previously inconceivable. Teacher Notes: Erik JI Watson Elementary Describe the structure of atoms and the electrical charge of protons, neutrons, and electrons (PS-M-A2). 5th grade- Science & Social Studies Special Directions: This can be completed as individuals, or in larger groups Activity EvaluationActivity Evaluation: The activity will be evaluated using the rubric provided on the website Prerequisites for students: Completed “Matter and it’s Properties” unit in 5th grade science curricula
