1 Earth/Environmental Science

2 Essential Questions Can you Identify and describe the four major branches of Earth Science 2. What are relative types of Earth Science events to the major branches? Be sure you can answer questions about these concepts!

3 Jot down what you think Earth Science is.
What is Earth Science? Jot down what you think Earth Science is. Also, known as geoscience, Earth Science studies the physical systems of the earth

4 Major Categories of Science
Science can be classified according to three main categories. Life science deals with living things. Physical science deals with matter and energy. Earth science investigates Earth and space.

5 Earth Science: is four sciences rolled into one!
Geology Meteorology Oceanography Astronomy

6 The first is: GEOLOGY which studies
the systems of the Earth's interior and surface

7 the universe, stars, planets, and moons
The second is: ASTRONOMY which studies the universe, stars, planets, and moons In our case how the Earth relates to it’s place in the celestial sphere and how that effects The Earth’s systems.

8 The third is: METEOROLOGY which studies the Earth's atmosphere:
weather and storms

9 The fourth is: OCEANOGRAPHY which studies the Earth's oceans.

10 But Coach Holmes are we not taking Earth aaannd Environmental Science???
Ah yes. We do have that environmental element to this class.

11 Therefore what do you think environmental science adds to this class?
It is the study of the interactions between biological and physical systems. Specifically how humans impact these physical systems.

12 Nope. Ecology is the study of the interactions between organisms and their environment. Ecologists might investigate the relationship between a population of organisms and some physical characteristic of their environment,

13 Environmental Science
Is the study of the physical and biological factors along with their chemical interactions that affect an organism… Specifically the human population? “Not in my Back Yard”

14 The Methods of Science 1.1 What is Science? Science is a method for studying the natural world. The search for knowledge It is a process that uses observation and investigation to gain knowledge about events in nature.

15 The Methods of Science What is Science? It is a system of knowledge and the methods used to search for that knowledge! Scientists ask questions to learn about the natural world.

16 The application of science
What Is Technology? How we apply the knowledge we have gleaned from science…in short… The application of science

17 What is an Earth Science Event?

18 An EVENT is: An Occurrence on Earth that causes a change

19 List an EVENT for each Branch of Earth Science in your notes.

20 Here are some EVENTS for OCEANOGRAPHY:

21 Here are some EVENTS for METEOROLOGY:

22 Here are some EVENTS for ASTRONOMY:

23 Here are some EVENTS for GEOLOGY:

24 What is an ACTIVITY of an OCEANOGRAPHER?
Physical oceanographers study the physical conditions and physical processes within the ocean such as waves, currents, eddies, gyres and tides; the transport of sand on and off beaches; coastal erosion; and the interactions of the atmosphere and the ocean.

25 What is an ASTRONOMER? They Use: Telescopes and other optics.
Computers Cameras Space vehicles and space probes They analyze data and make assumptions They plot and discuss locations and movement of celestial bodies.

26 What is a GEOLOGIST?  They study the Earth, the materials it is made of, the structure of those materials, and the forces and processes acting upon them. They study natural resources, do environmental consulting, advise government agencies, non-profit organizations, and universities. All geologists prepare reports, do calculations and use computers.

27 What is a METEOROLOGIST?
a person with specialized education "who uses scientific principles to explain, understand, observe, or forecast the earth's atmospheric phenomena and/or how the atmosphere affects the earth and life on the planet."

28 YOUR ASSIGNMENT IS: Find one newspaper article or a picture with captions relating to EACH of the four different Earth Sciences. Use different Newspapers and Countries USE: Newspapermap.com. Include: Country, City, Date and name of the Newspaper Names: Writer, Scientist… Answer these questions for EACH of the four articles.

29 THE TASKS FOR EACH ARTICLE ARE:
Identify the BRANCH of Earth Science. Describe the type of EVENT that is covered by this article. Describe the ACTIVITY that a scientist would have to do for this article to be written.
