1. Unit 2 What is international governance?
Governance refers to the different ways that organizations, institutions, businesses, and governments manage their affairs.
Governance is the act of governing, and thus involves the application of laws and regulations, but also of customs, ethical standards and norms. 
As there is no global government, international governance typically involves a range of actors including states, as well as regional and international organizations.

2. Examples of International Governance
NATO
North Atlantic Treaty Organization
Signed in April 1949
The 28 countries agree to defend each other in the case of attack
Member countries include those in North America and Europe EU
The EU is a unique economic and political partnership between 28 European countries that together cover much of the continent
The EU was created in the aftermath of the Second World War
The first steps were to foster economic cooperation: the idea being that countries who trade with one another become economically interdependent and so more likely to avoid conflict.

4. How does the UN Make change?
The UN facilitates international relations(how countries work together) in all forms:
Military
Economy
Humanitarian needs
Environmental Concerns
The way they state decisions/recommendations happens in the form of RESOLUTION

5. Resolutions What is a resolution?
It is basically a long sentence used to STATE a POSITION or SUGGEST ACTION on a particular subject.
How many parts are there to a resolution?
1. Heading
2. Preambular Clauses
3. Operative Clauses

6. Heading Contains: The name of the committee
The council to which the proposal is being proposed
The authors of the resolution (by country or committee name)
Date, topic area, and UN identification number

7. Preambular Clauses This gives background information about the issue
WHAT has gone on before
WHY or WHAT basis the resolution was written
Example: A preambular clause on Peace in the Middle East might state the reasons why peace is beneficial to that region, or for what reason peace is more critical at that time.

8. Operative Clauses This is also known as “Activating” Clauses
This section tells the reader how the resolution will operate, or WHAT THE RESOULTION PROPOSES TO DO
In the Middle East example, the operative clauses might tell how the resolution plans to achieve peace in the Middle East. It might recommend which policies seem most beneficial to peace.
They may say a new committee needs to be formed
Suggest a specific UN council take action
Set a time frame for actions to take place
