2. RED.ES
Public entity which belongs to the Spanish Ministry for Tourism, Industry and Trade, through its State Department for Telecomunications and Information Society
Its main duty is to promote Information Society in Spain
In order to achieve this aim, RED.ES:
Manages the “.es” Registry
Has an “Information Society Observatory”
Manages several Programs related to the Promotion of Information Society in Schools, Libraries, Hospitals, Prisons, Courts, Rural Areas…
Manages an Anti-virus Alert Center
Promotes the digitalization of cultural heritage
Provides e-Government services
Develops programs of digital literacy
Manages, since 1st January 2004, RedIRIS, the Spanish National Research and Education Network

3. RedIRIS
RedIRIS has been the Spanish Research and Education Network since its creation, back in 1988
It manages the National Research Network Infrastructure, with a core at 2,5 Gbps and nodes in all Spanish regions
It has approx. 300 affiliated institutions (mainly Universities and Public Research Centers)
It provides some applications and services to these affiliated institutions (AAI through PAPI, pkIRISGrid, mobility through eduroam.es, security through IRIS-CERT, multimedia services, FTP, etc.)
It participates in several EU reseach projects, including GÉANT2, EGEE- II, ALICE, EELA, EUMEDCONNECT, EUMEDGRID, MUPBED
RedIRIS also participates in international organizations and fora: TERENA, FIRST, Global Grid Forum, etc.
It organizes training events for the affiliated instituions, sharing the knowledge gathered at research projects, and allowing members of its community to exchange information among themselves
RedIRIS also publishes a quarterly review (now in its issue n. 78).

4. RedIRIS & GRID & EGEE-II
GRID related-activities of RedIRIS:
RedIRIS participates in the Spanish iniciatives for Research Grids, IRISGrid ( and IBERGRID
In January 2006, RedIRIS got pkIRISGrid certified by EUGridPMA
It participated at CrossGRID, and it is a member of EGEE-II, EELA and EUMEDGRID
It participates in Global Grid Forum Meetings, and it advices Latin American institutions
RedIRIS in EGEE-II
In EGEE, RedIRIS had 0,5 FTEs for NA5 (Policy Coordination)
It participates in SA1 (2 FTEs, for certification and security issues), NA2 (0,5 FTEs, for dissemination and outreach), NA3 (0,5 FTEs for training), and NA5 (0,5 FTEs unfunded for Policy coordination – to be funded after the amendment of EGEE-II contract).
Within NA2, we focus on relations with Government and the media, translation and creation of promotional material, creation of an EGEE-II website in Spanish, event organzation and attendance, etc.
