1 ELEMENTS & PRINCIPLES of DESIGN

2 ELEMENTS & PRINCIPLES of DESIGN
Students, take notes on the following terms. There will be a Random Terminology Review at the end of this presentation.

3 ELEMENTS & PRINCIPLES of DESIGN
The elements and principles of design are the building blocks used to create a work of art.

4 ELEMENTS & PRINCIPLES of DESIGN
Elements of design include lines, shapes, size, space, color, texture, and value.

5 ELEMENTS & PRINCIPLES of DESIGN
Principles of design are balance, contrast, emphasis, proportion, pattern and gradation.

6 ELEMENTS & PRINCIPLES of DESIGN
Elements and Principles of design combine to make the Compostion of the artwork.

7 ELEMENTS Lines- The linear marks made with a pen or brush or the edge created when two shapes meet. Shapes- A shape (circles, squares, triangles and rectangles) is a self contained defined area of geometric or organic form. Size- is simply the relationship of the area occupied by one shape to that of another. Space- is the depth or area that a shape or form occupies. Color- Includes primary (red, blue & yellow); secondary and tertiary colors. Texture- is the feel, the surface quality of a shape - rough, smooth, soft hard glossy. Value- is the lightness or darkness of a color. Value is also called Tone

8 PRINCIPLES Balance- is the distribution of the visual weight of objects, colors, texture, and space. Contrast- occurs when two elements are different by using differences in size, value, color, and type.. Emphasis- is the part of the design that catches the viewer’s attention, focal point. Proportion- is the feeling of unity created when all parts (sizes, amounts, or number) relate well with each other. Pattern- is the repeating of an object or symbol all over the work of art. Gradation- a way of combining the art elements by using series of gradual changes in those elements.
