1 Healthy eating Pre- pregnancy, during pregnancy and breast-feeding Unit 1.1 2.1
Sam Emsley

2 Pre-pregnancy diet A healthy diet is necessary before pregnancy so that the mother can build reserves of vital nutrients for the unborn child in the first three months. Follow the eat well plate and 5 a day – eat fresh foods Cut down on sugar and salt Do not eat soft cheese, pate, liver or raw meat.

3 Never go on a slimming diet – or eat more than you need –
you are NOT eating for two. Folic Acid tablets and diet (broccoli, nuts and wholegrain cereals) are necessary for baby’s brain and spinal development – this prevents spina bifada. Vegetarians/vegans need to boost proteins with soya, pulses and Vitamin B12.

4 During pregnancy There are certain foods that have to be completely avoided to protect the unborn baby. A lot of the problems come from undercooked, pre- prepared, unwashed fruit & veg, peanuts and some fish and meats. There is a comprehensive table in the Meggitt book page 311 and the unit is uploaded on Moodle to help you. Create a table to explain the reasons for not eating each food advised to avoid.

5 Guidelines for healthy eating whilst pregnant
Lots of information is provided on the same page in book or on Moodle – create a leaflet for a Teenage Mother to advise what she should be eating. You need to add, how much water and milk she should consume daily.

6 Foods whilst breastfeeding
Breastfeeding helps mothers regain their pre-pregnancy weight. Diary products are essential at this stage – you need to state what these are?
