1 Teaching children how to use the ruler!
Lesson Plans to Help the Middle School Teacher All art work seen was done by students.

2 Make learning the ruler FUN
You are a creative innovative individual; or you would first, not be an artist, and secondly not be a teacher! Think outside the box, in the zone, or out in space if you have to!

3 We judge everything VISUALLY
Make the worksheet FUN! Use visual images that are current, controversial, cute, or what ever it takes. Create a detective story out of a picture and make them solve the “puzzle” of who did it through measurements!

4 This has been successfully used with 6th grade and I am sure it would work in any elementary class as well. The questions: ask the child to measure different parts of the truck like the cab, logo, tires, the double lines, etc. It then makes them add some together to find a sum. The ruler is included on this one so that the child also has to judge measurements from any part of the ruler as opposed to only using the first part of the ruler.

5 US measurements A great deal of focus has gone into the US population learning the metric system over the past 30 years; to the point that OUR measurements have been left by the wayside. However, I try to focus the students on these facts: All Art Supplies Frames Building Materials Maps USE INCHES, FEET, YARDS, AND MILES

7 If given a project that is perceived to be “cool”, “rad”, or whatever term is current, the child will try harder to focus on the measurements.

9 Mixed Media Projects like this one, can serve multiple purposes.
Use of the ruler, color theory, and beginning one point perspective are all packaged into one project. Start with a block lettering grid. Equally disperse the letters of the name across the page. Using colored pencils choose a bright color for the name. Color management starts with light colors on the outside and dark in the inside of each letter. Each child will have to come up with their own color scheme. Offering only left right and center for the vanishing point will not only cut down on confusion, but will help with the “drama” of the picture.
