5 Explores Architecture

Objectives Discover and appreciate the variety of architecture from around the world. Know architectural landmarks of places. Know the terms: architecture, architect, value, intensity, and complementary colors, cityscape, color scheme Improve observation drawing skills. Overlap fore-, mid-, and background to make the illusion of depth.

Objectives, continued Control paint and paint mixing. Experiment with value and intensity. Discover the effects of a complementary color in a monochromatic color scheme. Appreciate the architecture of St. Clement Church

Research 1.Discuss architecture and landmarks. (Use flash cards to learn.) 2.Homework: Find at least 5 architectural landmarks besides The Arch. Copy or draw a picture of each one and take notes about each one, giving names and places plus 2 more interesting facts about each one. Be ready to share findings in class (jig saw style)…there will be extra credit for discovering an architectural landmark no one else in the class has.

Draw 1.Choose interesting architecture to draw from observation. Can be more than 5 and can include the arch. 2.Put the horizon low - make only one base line. 3.Overlap fore-, mid, and background to make the illusion of depth. 4.Go over lines with thick and thin permanent markers.

Paint 1.Discuss/review vocabulary: monochormatic, complementary, color scheme, tint, shade, dull, bright, value, intensity. 2.Make and use many values and intensities for your monochromatic color 3.Use the complement for one thing ( to make an accent)? 4.Paint everything.

Finish 1.Cover up mistakes with dark values. To clean up your edges, you can also go over your lines with colored pencils or markers 2.Stay in your color scheme for the paint and colored pencil 3.Stay in your color scheme as you frame it. 4. Put your first name, last initial, and homeroom on the front. Fill out your grading grid. Turn it in on time.

Watch Demo: Using double rinse system (review: “dirty rinse then clean rinse”) Wetting and cleaning the paint set. Making an intermediate color (extra credit) Mixing high or light values - tints; making paint translucent Mixing low or dark values - shades Mixing low intensities Turning paper to paint against the lines Holding the brush vertically to get into tight spaces

An Intermdidiate color, like red orange, is harder to work with, so it is extra effort points.

grade why Effort Tell about what was hard for you to do. Tell about any problems you solved while designing AND making your artwork. Did you choose to use intermediate colors? (Attach all your sketches.) Craftsmanship Tell how well (neatly) you used all the media and processes. Did you draw well? Did you stay inside your lines when painting? Creativity What new ideas or techniques (for you) did you show? Composition How much does it look like a finished piece of art? Did you use your space well? Understanding: -First name, last initial, and homeroom show on the front of your art. -It’s on time…if late, why? -How good is your evaluation on this page? Did you choose interesting architecture? Did you draw from observation? Did you overlap fore-, mid, and background to make the illusion of depth? What did you find out about architecture, especially the buildings that you drew? ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________ What color did you use for your monochromatic color? What color did you use for your complement? Did you only use the complementary for one thing ( to make an accent)?
