2 Aims of this Evening To provide you with an overview of the structure of Plantsbrook Sixth Form. To make you aware of the expectations within Plantsbrook Sixth Form. To answer any questions you may have. 4 Plantsbrook Sixth Form 2016 results
2016 results were once again excellent at Plantsbrook Sixth Form. 100% of all Year 13 qualifications were passed 18.1% of grades awarded were A*-A grades Average A Level grade was a C Average BTEC Level 3 grade was a Distinction* 73% of Year 12 students continued with us

6 What’s the difference between AN A-Level and BTEC Level 3?
A Level – Predominantly assessed through exams at the end of Year 12 and Year 13. BTEC – Mostly assessed through coursework and extended tasks. One BTEC = One A-Level Most Universities accept both types of qualification when making offers.

7 changes to a level No January exams anymore Re-formed A-Level subjects
With new subjects, the AS result does not count towards the A2 qualification, A2 is entirely assessed at the end of Year 13 The only subjects in which AS still counts towards A2 are Maths, Accounting, Product Design and Media

10 Assessment & reports Performance Review - before Half Term
First set of projected grades – end of November Year 12 Report – Just before Christmas Mock Exams – 4th to 13th January 2017

11 Attendance & punctuality
We expect outstanding attendance - 97% Any absences are recorded the same as lower down school – phone call/letters Medical appointments – evidence for file is required Students should be in school until 1.20pm every day, they are not allowed to leave the building during this time

12 Dress code Smart/Casual
No tracksuits, ripped jeans, crop tops, vest tops Shorts/Skirts must be worn no shorter than 4” above the knee Leggings not to be worn as trousers 6th Form Uniform: for occasions, many of these throughout the year

13 “I don’t have any homework”
It’s a lie! 1 hour independent work per day for every lesson 5 hours a week per subject For most students = 15 hours a week Students have approximately 1-2 hours free in school every day Private Study? (Timetabled) Study Support? (Tuesday pm) You can request this

The future – year 13 Minimum of D, or Merit, in subjects they wish to study (3) Nationally about 50% of students do not continue to A2 due to poor AS grades. In a recent UCAS survey of Year 12 students 74% wish they had worked harder.

Necessity for some professions Students should check degree course requirements now includes section for parents and guardians

22 Apprenticeships Alternative route to highly skilled roles, i.e. BBC, Jaguar Land Rover, Capgemini Gain qualification equivalent to HE, fully funded! Higher apprenticeships only found in a few industries such as engineering, finance, IT Highly competitive; variable requirements Applications open throughout the year

Research career ideas and progression routes to find appropriate Post-18 option(s) Set career goals and increase motivation to succeed at A Level Look out for advertised careers events/opportunities – bulletin, website Visit to the Skills Show, NEC – Friday, 18 November Enhancements/ voluntary/part time work to increase knowledge and skills Plan some work experience

27 Work Experience Check students’ understanding of the profession
Work Experience Week – 17–21 July 2017 Check students’ understanding of the profession Check suitability – do they have necessary skills/attributes? Essential for some courses, i.e. healthcare, teaching Will be launched in January – can get ahead now!!!

29 Enrichment We have a number of Enrichment activities that take place throughout the year, here are a few examples: 6th form Football team Bake-off – raising money for McMillan Student Leaders Tutor support in Year 8 Subject support in various departments working with the younger years. Mentoring World Challenge First Aid

30 Enrichment Please encourage your child to take part in the enrichment programme. It allows for greater social development. Sets them apart from their peers at interviews for Universities, Apprenticeships or entering the world of work. Gives them a release from the pressures of their studies

32 Key to success in 6th form
Go the extra mile (Reading/Research/Spec) Understand as you go (Check within 24hrs) Revise from day one (make something) Make full use of your teachers (ask, ask, ask) Get the most from your lessons (participate) Take care where you study (quiet & no phone) Make the most of exam board websites (Papers) Maintain your motivation (future plans?) Get the right balance
