Counselors are available to meet with you re: goals beyond high school; graduation plans; questions regarding classes; personal/social/emotional support. 5 Getting to Graduation What is a credit?
Students are awarded .5 credit for each semester long class they pass. Each semester students will earn .5 credit x 6 classes= 3.0 credits Each year, students earn 6.0 credits (.5 credits x 12 classes) How many credits are needed for graduation? Students must earn 24.0 credits in the required areas to graduate Possible to earn more than 24.0 credits (4 years x 6 credits = 24.0 credits, not including zero hour or MS credits)

4.0 Credits of ENGLISH (Kentwood Graduation Requirement) -3.0 Credits of Composition and Literature 3.0 Credits of SOCIAL STUDIES (Kentwood Graduation Requirement) Leadership credit does not count towards requirement 3.0 Credits of MATH (Kentwood Graduation Requirement) - 3.0 credits Algebra 1-2, Geometry 1-2, Algebra 3-4 - SENIOR YEAR math required OR successful completion of Pre-calculus Seniors must earn 1.0 credit in math, or in a math based quantitative course (for example, AP Statistics), or in a math based career and technical course (for example, Accounting). An algebra based science course (Chemistry or Physics) taken during the senior year also would satisfy this requirement, in addition to fulfilling a science credit. 2.0 Credits of SCIENCE (Kentwood Requires 3.0 Credits) - 2.0 credits of laboratory science -1.0 credit MUST be algebra based science (chemistry or physics) 2.0 Credits of World Language (Kentwood Graduation Requirement) - 2.0 credits of the same language American Sign Language (ASL) qualifies for most universities 1.0 Credit of FINE, VISUAL, OR PERFORMING ARTS (Kentwood Requires 2.0 Credits) Source: Washington Higher Education Coordinating Board. 13 Choosing Your Courses Tips:
Work on 4 year plan to help you plan ahead and choose the correct courses. Doing this step helps ensure you make room for all the KW graduation requirements. Choose challenging classes, but also realistic classes for your academic level. If you are aiming for college, they want to see you challenge yourself but also keep a decent GPA throughout HS. Remember that your choices are final and cannot be changed once you are done with registration. We will only make schedule CORRECTIONS in the fall. These are not the same as schedule changes.  Plan wisely!

We are an educational enrichment program that is customized by you and your school community, along with the mentorship of Kentwood staff. Leadership I challenges and empowers you to better the school climate, boost GPAs, increase student attendance and involvement, and improve school pride. With a focus on student and staff recognition, you will work on goal setting, problem solving and be taught positive leadership approaches to help encourage yourself and others to make the Kentwood experience more valuable and enjoyable. 16 AVID Advancement Via Individual Determination
Are you a college-bound student? Do your future career goals include attending a 4-year university? Do you earn Bs and Cs in Math and/or English classes? Do you want to be organized, but find it difficult? AVID is an elective course that supports students in their high school classes in order to their reach college dreams! This is a 4-year program that builds skills, and provides in-school tutoring with peer groups and tutors. If you are interested in learning more, pick up an application today! IMPORTANT If you do not choose alternate courses, the computer will choose them for you! Important tip….these will be the courses with room. What does that mean? The courses we offer that students didn’t want to take. What you sign up for is what you are committing to taking next year. We will be unable to make changes in the fall because we create the Master Schedule based on what you request right now. So choose wisely!
