2 Pre-Test Answers: Lines of Latitude measure distance: North and South
Three states below 30°N = Florida, Texas, Louisiana State mostly east of 70°W = Maine Three states that extend west of 120°W = California, Oregon, Washington

5 Latitude and Longitude

6 Latitude and longitude work like a map grid, but on a global scale
Latitude and longitude work like a map grid, but on a global scale. These two sets of imaginary lines encircle the globe. Locations on these lines are stated in degrees (°). Latitude and Longitude coordinates are the best way to find exact location on the Earth. What are some other ways to locate places? Why do you think latitude and longitude are better ways to locate places?

7 Prime Meridian: starting point for measuring longitude
Prime Meridian: starting point for measuring longitude. It is labeled as 0⁰ and runs north/south.

8 Longitude: Lines on a map used to measure distance east or west of the Prime Meridian

9 Equator: line of latitude that is the halfway point between the North and South Pole. It is labeled as 0⁰ and runs east/west.

10 Latitude: lines on a map used to measure distance north or south of the Equator

12 Latitude is 1st and Longitude is 2nd: Find: 35⁰ N, 120⁰ W
What state is it in?

13 Now we are going to quietly practice with a partner nearby.
Turn your paper over to the back and use the coordinates to find the location of the letter they are referring to. PLEASE ASK FOR HELP IF YOU DO NOT UNDERSTAND! =)
