9 Introduction to Human Anatomy & Physiology
Chapter 1 The Human Body: An Orientation

10 Essential Question Learning Goal
How are anatomy and physiology related? How is the human body organized? I will be able to explain the relationship between anatomy and physiology and list the organization of the human body.

11 Turn and Talk Turn to the person beside
When the timer starts, person closest to the front door please tell your partner what you know about anatomy. When the timer goes off stop talking. Second partner, tell you your partner what you know about physiology. Between the two of you, determine how many body systems you agree upon.

12 Share out What do we know about Anatomy?
What do we know about Physiology? What body systems do we know?

13 Anatomy defined as Study of body structures
organized into Six structural levels

14 Anatomy Study of body structures
1. Location- where a structure is found 2. Appearance- what a structure looks like 3. Relationship- to other structures

15 WORD BANK: Cellular, Chemical, Organ, Organism, Organ System, Tissue

16 Levels of structural organization – Pg 3-4
Identify the six levels of organization of the human body and explain what each level of organization is structurally composed of.

17 Levels of Structural Organization
Molecules Atoms Chemical level Atoms combine to form molecules Figure 1.1, step 1

18 Levels of Structural Organization
Smooth muscle cell Molecules Atoms Cellular level Cells are made up of molecules Chemical level Atoms combine to form molecules Figure 1.1, step 2

19 Levels of Structural Organization
Smooth muscle cell Molecules Atoms Smooth muscle tissue Cellular level Cells are made up of molecules Tissue level Tissues consist of similar types of cells Chemical level Atoms combine to form molecules Figure 1.1, step 3

20 Levels of Structural Organization
Smooth muscle cell Molecules Atoms Smooth muscle tissue Epithelial tissue Connective tissue Blood vessel (organ) Cellular level Cells are made up of molecules Tissue level Tissues consist of similar types of cells Organ level Organs are made up of different types of tissues Chemical level Atoms combine to form molecules Figure 1.1, step 4

21 Levels of Structural Organization
Smooth muscle cell Molecules Atoms Smooth muscle tissue Epithelial tissue Connective tissue Blood vessel (organ) Cardio- vascular system Cellular level Cells are made up of molecules Tissue level Tissues consist of similar types of cells Organ level Organs are made up of different types of tissues Organ system level Organ systems consist of different organs that work together closely Chemical level Atoms combine to form molecules Figure 1.1, step 5

22 Levels of Structural Organization

23 Structural Levels of Organization
Choose one of the following 3 word banks, or come up with your own, to illustrate the six structural levels of the human body. Make sure all six structural levels are named  The levels are in the correct order  An example from the provided list is also named for each level  The example correctly matches the structural level 1 2 3 Human Oxygen Calcium Carbohydrate Heart Osteocyte Nervous Tissue Red Blood Cell Skeletal System Neuron Cardiovascular System Bone Brain Cardiac Muscle Tissue Compact Bone Tissue Nervous System

24 Anatomy Six structural levels Chemical a. Inorganic Examples?
(salt, H2O, O2, CO2) b. Organic- contains both C and H Examples? (carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, nucleic acids)

25 Anatomy Six structural levels Cellular-
The smallest unit of matter that carries on life’s processes.

26 Anatomy Six structural levels Tissue-
a group of cells that has a specialized structural and functional role

27 Anatomy Six structural levels 4. Organ a specialized structure formed from a group of tissues

28 Anatomy Six structural levels Organ system
a set of interrelated organs that work together to provide specialized functions

29 Anatomy Six structural levels Organism An individual living thing

30 What body systems do you know?
Working as a group list as many body systems as you know. Hint: There are 11.

31 Structural Levels of Organization
Choose one of the following 3 word banks, or come up with your own, to illustrate the six structural levels of the human body. Make sure all six structural levels are named  The levels are in the correct order  An example from the provided list is also named for each level  The example correctly matches the structural level 1 2 3 Human Oxygen Calcium Carbohydrate Heart Osteocyte Nervous Tissue Red Blood Cell Skeletal System Neuron Cardiovascular System Bone Brain Cardiac Muscle Tissue Compact Bone Tissue Nervous System

32 Closure/Exit Ticket On your slip provided answer the following ON THE FRONT: What body system are you most interested in learning and why? ON THE BACK: What question(s) do you still have from today’s lesson?

33 Day 2-Body Posters August 15th, 2016

34 Bellwork Turn in Lab Contract and Syllabus if you haven’t done so
Sit tight for instruction

35 Agenda 8/15 Review Procedures Finish Body Posters!
Lab and Procedures QUIZ tomorrow!

36 Review Procedures Bathroom Entering Class When I need your attention
When absent what do you do? How is the filing cabinet organized? When the bell rings what do you do? How do you know what supplies you can use? How many days can you turn in late work? How many points off? If you need to borrow a pencil what do you do?

37 Revie Procedures Con’t
Where do you turn in work? When can you use your electronic devices? What happens if you are caught with your electronic device? When turning in work how must your paper be headed?

38 Day 3-Body Posters August 16th, 2016

39 Bellwork 8/16 Turn in Lab Contract and Syllabus if you haven’t done so
Sit tight for instruction

40 Agenda 8/16 Finish Body Posters! Take your own notes on Ch 1.
Don’t need pages Pages10-12 on Maintaining life. Lab and Procedures QUIZ tomorrow!

41 Relative Positions

42 Bellwork 8/17 You need a writing utensil today and that is all.
You have your lab and procedures quizzes today as well. Sit tight and wait for instruction.

43 Agenda 8/17 Textbooks Lab Contracts Quizzes Relative Positions Notes
Link only Check out through library Lab Contracts Quizzes Relative Positions Notes Hw: Complete your CH 1 Notes – flashcards for terms.

44 Directional Terms The anatomical position of the body is our standard position when discussing anatomy. The body is standing erect The feet are together or close together The arms are on the sides with palms facing forward The head is erect and is looking straight ahead

45 Anterior/Ventral- toward the front
Posterior/Dorsal- toward the back

46 Superior- above, closer to the head
Inferior- below, closer to the feet

47 Medial- toward the midline
Lateral- Toward the side with respect to the midline

48 Proximal- closer to the trunk
Distal- further from the trunk

49

50 You Try It! 1. Complete the "Relative Positions and Body Planes Worksheet” Use the textbook to help you.

51 ____ Medial line ____ Ventral surface of trunk ____ Dorsal surface of trunk ____ Anterior surface of head ____ Lateral surface of head ____ Superior portion of ear ____ Inferior surface of ear ____ Anterior surface of arm ____ Posterior surface of arm ____ Lateral surface of arm ____ Medial surface of arm ____ Proximal portion of hand ____Distal portion of hand ____ Lateral surface of leg ____ Medial surface of leg ____ Superior surface of foot ____ Inferior surface of foot

52 Body Planes Sagittal- Divides the body into left and right portions
Midsagittal- Divides the body into equal left and right portions Transverse- Divides the body into superior and inferior portions (Horizontal) Frontal- Divides the body into anterior and posterior portions (Coronal)

53 Body cavities are openings which hold various organs

54 Bellwork 8/18 If you were absent come see me.
Place your HW on your desk! Pick up a red pen You need your binder and divider tabs today Sign out a laptop computer. You will need to share! Wait for instruction Sorry lab was cancelled today…Ghosts did not set properly. Will be next week. Probably Monday so wear shoes!
