3 Hinduism’s Polytheistic – religion that holds a belief in many gods
Brahma – the Creator Vishnu – the Preserver Shiva – the Destroyer Has no single founder (combination of beliefs) Sacred texts include the Vedas and Upanishads

4 Hinduism Core Beliefs Reincarnation – after death, an individual’s spirit is born again Goal is to achieve moksha, or exit from the cycle of rebirth

5 Hinduism’s Core Beliefs
Movement in the cycle is determined by: Karma – all the good or bad deeds of a person’s life (follow from one life to the next) Dharma – a person’s religious and moral duties in life

Caste system – strict system of social groups that people were born into, each caste had its own dharma Dominated every aspect of a person’s life (jobs, rights, etc.)

7 Founder: Siddhartha Gautama – “the Buddha”
Buddhism Founder: Siddhartha Gautama – “the Buddha” Hindu prince who sought to end suffering by achieving nirvana, or enlightenment

The Four Noble Truths All life is suffering The cause of suffering is desire To end suffering, end desiring To overcome desire you must follow the Eightfold Path (prescription on how to live life)

Believed in karma, dharma, and reincarnation Rejected the gods of Hinduism Rejected the caste system, anyone can achieve Nirvana. Exit from the cycle could be achieved in one lifetime
