The term 'artificial nail enhancement' incorporates any procedure that lengthens, thickens or otherwise alters the appearance of the natural nail by artificial means. These procedures include the application of tips, acrylic liquid and powder systems, gel systems, sculpting on a form, any type of fabric wrap or the application of a full pre-formed artificial nail. Ultra violet gel nails. Gel nails are an extremely natural-looking enhancement, thin, clear, flexible, non-yellowing, non-porous and they resist lifting. They can also be used for natural nail overlays to strengthen natural nails. They are applied in an acrylic paste-like form and cured under a special UV lamp. They are much lighter in weight than conventional acrylic nails. The ultimate long-term goal with gels is for the client to end up growing out and wearing their own strong, healthy nails under the gel nails. Ultraviolet gel description Most UV gels are made from ‘acrylates’ which is part of the acrylic family with a newer group of gels that have been developed called ‘methacrylates’. UV gels contain monomers, but they rely mostly on a related form called an ‘oligomer’. Mono means one, poly means many and oligo means few. An oligomer is a short chain of monomers that is not long enough to be considered a polymer. Nail enhancement monomers are liquids and polymers are solids so oligomers are in-between. Oligomers are often thick, gel-like and sticky. UV gels rely on a special type of acrylate called urethane acrylate, while the newer UV gel systems use urethane methacrylates. UV gels are easy to apply, file and maintain and can create beautiful long-lasting nail enhancements. They have very little odour however they are not as durable as acrylic nail enhancements. The application differs from other types of nail enhancements. After the nail plate has been properly prepared, each layer of product applied to the natural nail, nail tip or form requires exposure to UV light to cure or harden. An exothermic reaction is the result of the light hitting the gel and triggering the polymerisation process. The light tips off a chemical reaction that makes the gel harden and when it first starts, it puts off some heat. Ultraviolet gel lamps. These lamps are designed to produce the correct amount of UV light needed to properly cure UV gel nail enhancement products. However if UV gel products are exposed to any ceiling lights or table lights their shelf life is shortened, causing the product to harden in its container. Depending on the circuitry of different lamps and bulbs, UV lights differ greatly so it is important to use the UV lamp that is recommended by the manufacturer of the UV gel products you are using. Wattage does not indicate how much UV light a UV lamp will emit. Wattage is a measure of how much electricity the bulb consumes. UV light bulbs will stay blue for years, but after a few months of use they may produce too little UV light to properly cure the enhancement. If bulbs are not changed regularly, service breakdown, skin irritation and sensitivity is more likely to occur. Apply gel nail enhancements

Nail diseases - contraindications to gel nail enhancements Technical name Description/Cause Action/Treatment Paronychia This is a bacterial inflammation of the tissue surrounding the nail. Pus and swelling are usually seen in the skin fold adjacent to the nail plate Refer to a physician. Pyogenic granuloma This is a severe inflammation of the nail in which a lump of red tissue grows up from the nail bed to the nail plate Refer client to physician. Tinea pedis Also known as ‘Athletes foot’. It is a fungus of the feet. Often grows on the bottom of the feet appearing as a red itchy rash in between the toes. Sometimes there is a small degree of scaling of the skin Refer to a physician or pharmacists. Onychomycosis This is a fungal infection of the nail plate seen as whitish patches or long yellowish streaks which can be scraped off the surface of the nail. Sometimes the free edge crumbles and can affect the entire nail plate. It is also known as ‘Tinea unguium’. Photos from Milady’s standard Cosmetology Apply gel nail enhancements

Nail growth Nails grow faster in summer than in any other season. Nail growth is faster in children and slows with age. Growth rates vary. The middle finger grows the fastest while the thumb grows the slowest. Nails grow faster in males than in females. Nails grow faster in daytime. Nails on the dominant hand grow slightly faster than the other hand. Vitamins, calcium and gel cannot stimulate nail growth. Damage to the cuticle can interrupt nail growth producing a ridge or mark on the surface of the new nail. Contrary to popular belief, nails do not continue to grow after death; the skin dehydrates and tightens, making the nails (and hair) appear to grow. Increases nail growth Decreases nail growth Trauma Ageing Youth Infection Length of finger Malnutrition Warm temperatures Genetics Pregnancy Diabetes Use of hands Smoking Nail biting Injury Buffing Breast feeding Apply gel nail enhancements

Applying Occupational Health and Safety procedures Infections can be spread between the client and operator, and from client to client, if the instruments used have not been thoroughly cleaned and disinfected between clients. Contact your local state health department for specific requirements. Any instrument or part of an instrument used on a client should be cleaned with detergent and warm water, disinfectant and dried before being used on another client. For single use instruments, it is recommended that they are discarded after each client use. Disposable cuticle sticks are recommended. Re-useable cuticle sticks and cutters, should be washed, disinfected and stored dry. Single use nail files are recommended. Re-useable nail files should be cleaned and disinfected between clients. Bowls should be cleaned and dried between each client use. Waste removal must follow relevant legislation and workplace policies. Wear a mask while performing nail enhancement services. Do not leave bottles un-capped or with loose fitting lids. Store products correctly as most nail chemicals have a one year shelf from date of manufacture. Do not smoke, eat or drink at the nail table. Sanitation – does not kill harmful bacteria and pathogens. Disinfectants – do kill all pathogens on a surface. Sterilisation – completely destroys all living organisms on an object or surface. Using disinfectants. Nail technicians should only use disinfectants specified by the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods (ARTG) for the approved purpose and for the time specified by the manufacturer. Do not use disinfectants on human skin, hair or nails. Only use disinfectants on furniture and used contaminated tools and implements. Sterilisation liquid Apply gel nail enhancements

Salon policies and procedures for gel nail enhancements Nail chemicals. Keep chemicals in a cool, dark, protected area. Never leave open chemical containers out on the table overnight. Vapors will evaporate into the air causing a toxic atmosphere. Do not allow sunlight onto your nail products as they break down the chemicals. Never store your chemicals near food. The chemicals are flammable so they must be protected from heat or naked flames. Never carry or store your chemicals in the car in-case of excessive heat. Keep MSDS on all the chemicals used in nail enhancements in a location where all salon staff can have access to this material. General policies and scope of practice. - Client record management. - Dust extraction and methods of venting air. - Equipment use and maintenance. - Incident reporting and safe use of chemicals. - Linen use and laundry procedures. - Personal hygiene and presentation of treatment area. - Use of personal protective equipment, dust masks, gloves, goggles. - Waste and hazardous substance. - Work health and safety. - Referring clients to other practitioners. - Importance of not stating a diagnosis of contraindications. Adverse effects of gel products. - Allergy to product. - Injury to natural nail due to poor removal technique. - Natural nail separation. - Product peeling. - Pseudomonas (bacterial infection). - Exothermic reactions. An exothermic reaction is a chemical reaction that releases energy by light or heat. This is frequently applied in the physical sciences to chemical reactions. Apply gel nail enhancements

Nail dust No dust is good to breathe as particles as small as 1 micron are found when filing an enhancement. Small particles float in the air for 30 – 40 minutes. Electric drills create the smallest dust particles. Dust can be irritating to the eyes, skin and lungs. Dust masks are essential to prevent dust inhalation. Practice good housekeeping procedures. Nail chemicals. Keep chemicals in a cool, dark, protected area. Never leave open chemical containers out on the table overnight or when not in use. Vapours will evaporate into the air causing a toxic atmosphere. Do not allow sunlight onto your nail products as it breaks down the chemicals. Never store your chemicals near food. The chemicals are flammable so they must be protected from heat or naked flames. Never carry or store your chemicals in the car in case of excessive heat. Keep M.S.D.S on all the chemicals used in gel nail enhancements. Be aware of product exothermic reaction which is a chemical reaction that produces heat. Chemicals that can affect health in gel nail enhancements are; Dehydrators. Adhesives. Activators. Nail polish and polish remover. Table with extraction ventilation Apply gel nail enhancements

Material safety data sheets MSDS contain information about the identity of chemicals and the hazards they present. These include; How the product reacts with other chemicals. Signs and symptoms of over-exposure and illnesses that may be caused by the product and relevant emergency and first aid procedures. How product ingredients may enter the body, and what control and protection measures should occur to prevent this from happening. Safe limits in the air to prevent overexposure by inhalation. Carcinogen hazard of the chemical. Precautions and handling procedures. Storage and disposal information. If you are concerned about any adverse reactions to the application of gel nails then a nail trial should be conducted prior to the full procedure commencing. MSDS should be stored in a cupboard where the chemicals are kept allowing easy access for all staff members. Patch test for allergic contact dermatitis (ACD). The chemicals which may cause allergic contact dermatitis in traditional gel nail and Shellac® contain acrylates. Skin contact with these chemicals may lead to the development of ACD. Conduct the patch test using hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) as it is an adequate screening agent for acrylate allergy. General contraindications to gel nail enhancements. - Allergic reactions and abnormal skin around nail. - Bacterial, fungal, parasitic and viral infections. - Bruising or swelling around nail and damaged natural nails from ineffective removal of enhancements. - Contraindications of products used in combination with other services. Your responsibility when working with chemicals Chemicals are perceived to be either dangerous or a toxic substance. ‘Chemophobia’ is a fear of chemicals. Understanding the chemicals you work with will ensure your safety and that of your client. Overexposure is a chemical hazard caused from prolonged repeated exposure beyond levels specified as safe by OH&S regulations. The most common sign of overexposure is skin irritation which can lead to sensitisation which is being sensitive to any foreign substance. Skin irritation is a warning that a problems may be occurring. It is usually momentary itchiness on the nail or surrounding tissue accompanied by redness. By stopping the exposure, the itchiness will go away. Other symptoms are; light-headedness, insomnia, runny nose, sore dry throat, watery eyes, tingling toes, fatigue and breathing problems. Allergic reactions. Continued exposure to the chemicals may cause the skin to become permanently sensitive to the chemical. An allergic reaction develops in the soft tissue with water blisters, rashes or open sores as a result of product use. These types of allergic reactions are not caused by vapour but only by contact with the monomer. If you become allergic to the chemicals from working with them, use a barrier cream or disposable gloves whilst conducting the service. Avoid allergies by; Changing the table towel during a service, after application and before filing. Never touching the soft tissue with the damp brush during application. Using a plastic backed pad to shape the hairs of the brush to avoid skin contact. Sculpting with the brush, not the file, to minimise dust particles. Using the proper mix ratio. Using a product nail system assures proper chemical balance and performance of a sculpting product. Always follow manufacturer’s instructions. Apply gel nail enhancements

Health care Extraction ventilation. This extracts vapours, dust, pollen and other fine particles from the air and will expel them outdoors. Do not rely on charcoal activated filtration systems as they quickly clog after several days and loose their effectiveness. They act like a chemical sponge absorbing vapours but not removing them. Ozone generators create ozone and put it into the salon air. Ozone will chemically alter vapours so they cannot be smelt but they are still in the air. Ozone is a powerful lung irritant and the major ingredient in smog that makes eyes water, the chest feel tight and it can leave a bitter metal taste in the mouth. Avoid odour cover-ups’. Anything you add to the monomer only covers-up the vapours and can change the chemical balance of the monomer. Odours can warn against overexposure danger. Control odours, don’t cover them up. Air contamination may cause other types of overexposure. Everything that is liquid evaporates into the air. Everyone has a breathing zone which is a 60cm sphere around each person’s mouth. If that breathing zone is contaminated with evaporated liquid vapours it can cause problems. Keep caps on bottle closed and wrap soiled paper table towels in a plastic bag and put into a covered bin. For cloth towels place in a plastic bag and put them inside a covered unit ready for washing. Protective equipment for nail operators. Some form of eye protection should be worn by the nail operator when working on clients. These can be goggles or glasses. Avoid wearing contact lenses in the salon as vapours will collect in the soft contacts and make them unwearable. Should an accidental splash occur, contact lenses prevent proper cleaning of the eye. Always wash your hands before touching the eye area. Other forms of protective equipment are face masks and gloves. Apply gel nail enhancements

Preparing the nail table Position the nail table in a well ventilated area away from direct air flow or draft. The area must be well lit so a light with a movable arm should be attached to the nail table. The surface of the lamp must be suitable for wiping over with disinfectant. A hand basin should be located close to the area with hot and cold water through a single outlet with taps. Liquid hand soap and single use papers towels should be beside the basin. A double bowl sink must be supplied with hot and cold water for washing equipment as well as the hand basin. One bowl is used for washing the equipment and the other for rinsing. The cleaning area must be separate from the client service and storage areas. Use a covered lined bin placed directly underneath where you are working. It should have a step open lid. Dispose regularly during the day. Towels should be clean for every client. Launder them separately from clothes. Create a beautiful, clean environment for your clients to visit. Dress correctly for the work you are doing. Your nails and personal hygiene have to be of a high standard. Good ergonomics for nail extensions. The service has to be comfortable for you as well as the client otherwise it could lead to excessive strain on your body. Don’t over extend your hands and always sit in a natural, unstrained position. Change positions often. Take frequent stretch breaks by standing up, stretching and realigning your body. Avoid using tools that vibrate. Vibration will aggravate carpel tunnel syndrome. Hold wrists straight and avoid bending them while filing or using a brush. Don’t hunch or hang your head whilst working. Adjust your chair to a comfortable position. Do not favour one hand over the other or lean in one direction all the time. Sculpting with the brush will minimise excessive filing. Listen to your body and don’t repeat painful positions. Ergonomic stool Apply gel nail enhancements

Client consultation A client’s personal preference for the look they want will determine the type of gel nail enhancement chosen however you need to take into consideration their lifestyle, the health of their natural nail and the length of the nail extension. Lifestyle. If the client’s hands are exposed to vigorous outdoor activities then their nails will require maximum strength. If their hands are constantly in water they will require more regular in fills. Nail shape and length of extension. Usually the most flattering shapes will be a free edge that mirrors the client’s lunula, which can be oval although some will be rounder or squarer. Square shape are stronger while pointy, tapered nails break easily. Long nails need to have straight sidewalls and be rounded only at the free edge to ensure strength. It is important to advise your client that normal growth of their natural nails will result in the nail enhancement eventually moving 25% to 50% further out than its initial placement. Nail health. Many client’s request nail enhancements to overcome nail problems such as strengthening weak nails or for helping to grow their natural nails longer. There are many factors that affect nail growth; diet, pregnancy and prescription medication. You need to advise your client of these factors. Pre-service preparation. Ensure nail table and all the necessary equipment is sanitised and readily available. Remove client’s jewellery prior to washing and dry their hands with a clean towel. Advise client of the features and maintenance required for gel nail enhancements, checking that the client fully understands the cost of the service. Conduct a client consultation. There are four basic nail shapes Anatomy of nail, hand and arm Pointed. This shape is used on clients with a narrow nail plate to give a delicate look to the hands. However this shape requires the sides of the nail plate to be filed away which results in a weaker nail. Square. This shape is very strong as the side of the nail plate are still intact. A shorter nail with the square shape would suit a client whose lifestyle was hard on their hands. Oval. This is an elegant shape most commonly used in female manicures. The sides of the nail plate are filed which can weaken the nail but not as much as the pointed shape. Round. This shape suits a shorter nail. It is strong and neat. Apply gel nail enhancements

Filing nails When filing nails it is essential that the angle of filing is constant on all ten fingers. Rounded nails - hold the file flatter when filing underneath the free edge. 180 ° is perfectly flat under the nail. Square nails - hold the file straight on, being perpendicular to the free edge. There is no tilt of the file. Always check from different angles of the nail for a symmetrical and uniform shape. Turn the client’s hand around to see what they look like from the client’s point of view. Hold up the hand with the back of the hand facing you and the palm facing the client with the fingers pointed upwards. Check that there are no lopsided nails. Products used in a gel nail enhancement service All tools and equipment should be cleaned and disinfected correctly, dried and stored ready for use. They are listed in alphabetical order. Abrasive - a rough surface that is used to shape or smooth the nail and remove the shine. It usually looks like a large emery board which comes in varying grades of grits. Activator - this is a liquid which is sprayed or brushed onto the gel surface to cure it. Adhesive dryer - drop on or spray that dries nail adhesive quickly. Antibacterial soap - has an antibacterial agent to sanitise hands. Base coat - this is recommended to prevent coloured pigments from nail polishes staining the nail plate. Buffer block - this is a lightweight rectangular block that is abrasive and used to leave a lasting shine to the nail. Brushes - a variety are available for applying gels. Chairs - these should be comfortable and have wheels for ease of mobility. The client’s chair should have back support for comfort. Cotton wool - used mostly for tipping orangewood sticks for applying product. Coloured polish - these come in matt and pearlescent shades. Cuticle oil - keeps the cuticle soft and helps prevent hangnails or rough cuticles. Disinfectant - only those specified under the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods can be used. Solutions must be labelled with name, date, dilution strength and preparation instructions. Disposable cloths - a clean disposable cloth should be given to the client to dry their hands. Also used for cleaning the table with disinfectant solution added. Fabric - these are small swatches of linen, silk or fibreglass material that are cut to fit a client’s nail size and shape or to match an area that needs to be repaired. The fabric can be adhered with gel or nail adhesive. Files - the nail file is used to shape the nail. The higher the grit the softer the file. The lower the git the coarser the file. 80 grit files are very coarse. 100 and 120 grit files are coarse while 180 to 240 is about medium. The finest files have numbers in the thousands. Products used in gel nail enhancement services Facial mask - used to prevent inhaling chemical vapours. Glass bowl - used to hold acetone or tip and glue remover. Gel - a thick liquid applied to the nail with a brush. It does not set until it is placed under a ultra-violet curing lamp sprayed with activator or immersed in water. Goggles - these may be necessary for the operator to wear when working with nail adhesives. Lamp - can either sit on the table or clamped to the table. Massage cream - used to soften and smooth the skin on the hands and around the nails. Manicure table - must enable the operator and client’s legs to fit comfortably underneath. There are tables that have extractor fans fitted in the table to remove vapours. Metal cuticle pusher - these have a flat surface at one end that is used to push back cuticles. They can be disinfected after each client. Nail brush - used to gently scrub the nails to remove dust and excess product. Nail sculpting forms - can be disposable or reusable. Disposable forms have an adhesive backing that holds the form in place. Reusable forms are made of aluminium, Teflon or plastic and have no adhesive backing. Nail tips - these come in various styles. All tips have a well that serves as the point of contact with the nail plate. The position stop is the point where the nail plate meets the tip before it is glued to the nail. Tips are designed with either a partial or full well. The tip should never cover more than half of the natural nail plate. Tips will vary in size and shape so it is advisable to keep an assortment of tips to cater for every natural nail shape. Nail adhesive - this is a glue or bonding agent used to secure the nail tip or fabric to the natural nail. Nail cushion - this is a cushion for resting the client’s hand on during the nail services. The cushion should be covered with a towel and a disposable cloth that is changed after each client. Nail polish remover - dissolves nail polish. Use non-acetone polish remover on artificial nails, as acetone will weaken or dissolve some tips, wrap glues and sculptured nail compounds. Nail sanitiser - removes natural oil, sanitises nail and dehydrates nail for better adhesion. Orangewood sticks - these have a flat surface at each end that is used to push back cuticles and remove polish from around the cuticles. They cannot be disinfected and are only for single use. Products used in gel nail enhancement services Small scissors - these are used to trim the fabric used in nail wraps. Tip cutters - used for cutting off the ends of artificial nail tips to the required length. Topcoat - a clear polish that is used to shine natural nails or is applied over the coloured polish to protect it. Top coat is also used to adhere nail art to the nail and to cover completed nail. Towels - a fresh towel is used to cover the nail cushion and should be changed after each client. Ultra-violet light - a specially designed light which emits ultra-violet rays for curing gel applications on nails. It should have a built in timer for correct usage. Tailing to build arches. To build arches, a tail technique is used with thin viscosity gels. A tail is when the nail technician dips the tip of the gel brush into the gel and lets it drip off the brush slightly, so that there is a tail of gel streaming down. The brush is kept completely off the nail with the end of the tail making contact with the nail. The brush is moved vertically down the nail, still not touching the nail with the brush, from the cuticle towards the free edge. The tail will lay down a line of gel that will self level. If too much gel is used it will run into the cuticles and sidewalls. Too little gel and there will not be enough strength. To set the nail, put under the UV light for approximately 15 to 20 seconds. This will harden the gel enough, but not cure it, so that it will stop moving and allow the work to continue on the other nails. Never apply more gel to a nail that has been set but not cured. Only apply additional coats of gel to other cured layers of gel. After arching and setting each nail, go back and cure the entire hand. You can purchase practice hands which are available from product wholesalers. Apply gel nail enhancements

Benefits of gel nails Gel nails are available in clear, coloured or white for the French look. They can be used for natural nail overlays, tip overlays, sculptured onto forms for short extensions and to help encapsulate a damaged free edge as it grows out. They have a chemical consistency similar to acrylic nails but differ in a number of ways. Traditional acrylics harden in about 10 minutes, but they may take up to 48 hours to fully cure. Ultra Violet gel nails harden in about 15 to 30 seconds and cure in about 2 minutes. Gels are odourless and produce no fumes. There are gels that are hypoallergenic, making it less likely for allergic reactions to the nails. There is less filing required to finishing the nail service. Gels give a natural feel and look with a clear finish and they do not yellow with age. Gels give a thin coating. Gels are flexible and lightweight. Gels do not lift. Always follow manufacturer’s instructions carefully with any of the product brands you are using. Clients need to consider the financial and maintenance commitments before going ahead with the service. Every two or three weeks, re-growth will need to be filled and the nails re-balanced to keep them in top condition. Coloured gel Apply gel nail enhancements

Applying nail tips Nail tips are an artificial nail made of plastic or nylon and are good for adding length to the natural nail. They are quick and easy to apply usually taking around 10 minutes for a complete application. A nail technician needs to determine the width, length and curvature of the tips based on the client’s shape of their natural nail plate. There are 4 basic types of natural nail plates. Flat nail. These have no c-curve from sidewall to sidewall. A natural curve nail tip best suits this shape because they are designed to fit medium to wide nail plates. C-curve nail. This has deep sidewalls and a high rounded curve over the top. A dramatic high profile arch nail tip best suits this nail plate. Arched nail. This has a convex curve from the cuticle out to the free edge. The nail tip should have deep sidewalls for this nail plate. Ski jump nail. This is a flat nail with a free edge that curves upwards and appears concave. Use a nail tip that is good for flat nails and has a natural curve for medium to wide nail plates. Tips commonly are a plastic representation of a human nail that is affixed to the natural nail. They are available in different shapes, colours and sizes and are covered with gel. ATTACHING NAIL TIPS 1. Complete pre-service sanitation service and remove any nail polish with polish remover 2. With a cotton tipped orangewood stick, push back the cuticles. Do not use cuticle oils or creams before applying tips 3. Gently remove the shine of the natural nail by using a fine abrasive file. Do not use too much pressure. Brush off any dust. 4. Select the correct size tip for the nails being better to oversize rather than undersize. The tip should completely cover the nail plate from sidewall to sidewall, but never cover more than half the length of the nail. Trim tips to the desired size if the well covers more than half the nail plate. If the tip has a deep c-curve and cannot be placed snugly across the nail plate, use a tip designed for flat nails. Using a tip that is too curved for the nail may cause vertical cracks in it. If a comfortable tip is a little too wide, file down the sides to fit. Place the tip selected for each tip in order of finger size on a towel in readiness for application 5. Make sure the natural nails are filed short 6. Apply nail antiseptic to remove more of the remaining natural oil and dehydrate the nail for better adhesion 7. Apply adhesive remembering that the glue will spread when affixing the nail tip. Place the nail tip at a 45° angle, catching the free edge in the groove of the tip, and slowly angle it down until it is affixed. Make sure it is centred and no air bubbles are present Nail preparation solution Applying tip Apply gel nail enhancements
27
ATTACHING NAIL TIPS CONTINUED
8. Apply a bead of adhesive to the seam between the natural nail plate and the tip to strengthen the stress point. Apply all ten tips and allow to dry 9. Shape the artificial nail by clipping and filing. Clip the nail tip with tip cutters leaving extra for filing into shape. If using scissors, do not clip straight across the nail tip as this will cause cracks and compromise the strength. Clip the corners of the nail tip and then file to desired shape 10. Shape to compliment the client’s fingers and hands. Use the shape of the client’s lunula as a guide 11. Sand the shine off the tip with a semi-coarse abrasive. Make sure the file is flat on the nail at all times. Never hold the file at an angle as this can cause a groove in the nail plate 12. Buff the tip using a buffer block for a perfect blend. Gently buff down the area between the natural nail plate and the tip extension. The tip should blend with the natural nail so that there is no visible line between the two 13. This completes the tip application. Tips however are seldom worn without an additional service such as acrylic, gel or wraps. If the tips are temporary then add a drop of cuticle oil to each nail and buff Shaping the nail Powder gel top coat Apply gel nail enhancements

Do not use cuticle oils or creams before applying gel 3. File the nail with a fine abrasive to remove shine and oil. Gel does not stick to shiny surfaces. Brush off dust thoroughly 4. Wipe nail with nail preparation sanitiser 5. Apply a thin coat of nail bonder to each nail including tip and cure for one minute 6. Apply first coat of gel thinly over the natural nail and the tip, being sure to get to edges without getting it into cuticles or touching the skin. Always follow manufacturer’s instructions on their method required to cure their gel product under the light 7. Apply the second coat, a little thicker than the first one. Pick up the ‘bead of gel’ on one side of the flat brush and hold the brush parallel and flat over the nail. Put the brush with gel down just short of the cuticle area and then push towards the cuticle slightly. This prevents a big cuticle ridge from forming. Pull brush, still flat and parallel to the nail, backward from cuticle to free edge. Do not let the brush actually touch the nail. Pull out and over (drop off) free edge. Go back with flat brush to right side and pull gel around the horseshoe and down the right side, being sure to get the gel as close as possible to the sidewalls without touching them. Gel will lift if it touches the skin and shrinks as it cures. Always follow manufacturer’s instructions on their method required to cure their gel product under the light 8. Apply third coat of gel thinly and cure Gel brush Powder gel base coat Apply gel nail enhancements

9. Inspect all nails, checking for thin spots that may need more gel. They need to be thin at the free edge and cuticle and reinforced at the stress areas 10. Clean the nail by wiping any sticky layer off the nails with gel cleaner. Make sure not to wipe sticky layer onto the skin. If too much sticky product is coming off then it means that the gel did not cure. If alcohol or cleanser has touched a nail, more gel cannot be applied without first rebuffing to take shine off the gel 11. If further filing is required at this stage, the nails would need to be sealed by a further layer of clear gel, as the layers would have been damaged 12. Buff the nails for a smooth surface with a buffer block 13. Wash client’s hands to remove all traces of dust. Apply a layer of clear gel, cure as per manufacturers’ instructions and wipe over sticky residue with the cleanser 14. Massage cuticle oil into cuticles and surrounding skin 15. Apply one base coat of gel on entire natural nail and form. Follow manufacturer’s instructions on the method required to cure their gel products under the light 7. Apply free edge gel to the nail form to create a short free edge. To build a short free edge, ‘draw a box’ with a line of gel from one sidewall straight out to the length desired and back down to meet the other sidewall, then pull gel back and forth to fill in box thinly. Cure the gel product under the light 8. Apply builder gel to the entire nail including the free edge. Cure under the light 9. Remove forms. Apply third coat of gel. Some arching may be required. GEL NAIL REFILL AND REBALANCE
1. Complete pre-service sanitation service and remove any nail polish with polish remover 2. Push back cuticle with a cotton tipped orangewood stick. Do not use cuticle oils or creams before applying gel 3. Shorten nails with tip cutter, hand file or drill. Nails should be kept at a consistent length. The nails have to be shortened by the amount they grew in-between fill appointments 4. Put preliminary shape into nails 5. Re-balance nail. File the entire top of the nail. Arches need to be moved back so gel needs to be thinned and bevelled at the free edge to accommodate the new arch placement. The whole gel surface needs to be thinned with shine removed to keep nail from becoming too thick with application of additional gel 6. Smooth the ledge between new growth and the existing enhancement with a fine abrasive until the growth area blends into the natural nail plate 7. Work through the cuticle area with a hand file and bevel the cuticle area to remove shine from the natural nail outgrowth. All cuticle and contaminants must be removed 8. Taper the sidewalls and put the final shape into the free edge. Have the client’s hand vertically facing you so can see the shaping. Dust nail thoroughly 9. Priming. Follow manufacturer’s instructions. If using a separate liquid primer apply to new nail growth only and let dry. If using a primer gel, apply to new growth area and cure in UV light 10. Apply a thin coat of gel to nail. Concentrate on new growth area, scrub the gel in and then pull out over entire nail. This coat should be very thin. Cure under light 11. Apply second coat of gel more generously than the first. Add arches with this coat of gel. Cure. Let gel brush float the gel on and be sure to seal end of nails by letting brush fall off the end of the nail while applying. When applying this coat, set the brush down just short of the cuticle, then push gel towards cuticle and pull back without ever lifting the brush. This helps eliminate a ridge at the cuticle Apply gel nail enhancements

NAIL WRAP APPLICATION 1. Nail wraps can be performed over natural nails or over a set of nail tips. Remove existing polish by saturating a cotton ball with polish remover. If client is wearing fabric warp nails, use a non acetone remover to avoid damaging them. Wipe with a stroking action towards the free edge. Clean around side wall with a cotton tipped wooden pusher 2. Dip nails into fingerbowl filled with warm water and liquid soap. Use a nail brush to clean nails over finger bowl. Rinse nails well and dry thoroughly 3. Use a cotton tipped wooden pusher and gently push back eponychium. Remove oily shine by lightly buffing nail plate with a medium fine abrasive (240 grit) 4. Apply nail dehydrator. Apply nail tips if desired 5. Cut fabric, which can be silk, linen or fibreglass, to the approximate width and shape of the nail plate or nail tip. Be careful to keep the dust and oils on your fingers from contaminating the adhesive backed fabric which could prevent the fabric from adhering to the nail 6. If you are using a non adhesive backed fabric you need to apply a drop of adhesive to the centre of the nail. Keep adhesive off the skin 7. Gently fit fabric over the nail plate 1/16 inch away from the side wall or eponychium. Press to smooth it onto the nail plate, using a small piece of thick plastic. Trim fabric, using small scissors, slightly smaller than the nail plate to prevent fabric from lifting and separating from the nail plate. Trim to 1/16 inch away from side walls and free edge 8. Draw a thin coat of wrap resin down the centre of the nail using the extender tip to apply. Do not touch the skin. The adhesive will penetrate the fabric and adhere to the nail surface. Use the plastic again to make sure that the resin is evenly distributed and there are no bubbles or areas of bare fabric Apply gel nail enhancements

Aftercare for clients It is part of your work as a nail technician to provide aftercare advice to clients who have received nail enhancement treatments. After each treatment it is best to record the results and responses from the client to the service. You need to rebook the client for follow up treatments. Advise the client; How to clean the nails. The importance of the use of hand cream, cuticle oil and nail strengthener in-between visits. Rebook for refills as well as manicures and paraffin treatments. With every enhancement service each nail is balanced in proportion to the length. Changing the length fills will disturb the balance and should be avoided. Nails should only be shortened at fills which requires a booking for a fill service. Clients can purchase products from your salon. Nail strengtheners. Hand and body moisturisers. Nail files. Cuticle oils. Nail polishes. Hand exfoliants. Should the client be unhappy with how the services was conducted or the final result is not what they expected, you need to discuss this with the manager of the salon. Between the client and the manager, a satisfactory settlement should be agreed upon. Apply gel nail enhancements

Sustainability Sustainability is the ability to maintain a certain status or process in existing systems. The most frequent use of the term sustainability, is connected to biological or human systems in the context of ecology. The ability of an ecosystem to function and maintain productivity for a prolonged period is also sustainability. Sustainability in general refers to the property of being sustainable. The widely accepted definition of sustainability or sustainable development was given by World Commission on Environment and Development in It defined sustainable development as "forms of progress that meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs.“ Practically, sustainability refers to three broad themes, economic, social and environmental, that must all be coordinated and addressed to ensure the long term viability of a community and the planet. The primary goal of sustainable is using renewable natural resources in a manner that does not eliminate or degrade them or otherwise diminish their usefulness for future generations. Sustainable work practices; Safe disposal of all waste materials to minimise negative impact on the environment. Efficient use of energy, water and other resources used to minimise negative impact on the environment. Ensuring the practice of waste minimisation and recycling is conducted to reduce impact on the environment. Comparing availability of products, equipment and services and adjusting their use to minimise negative impact on the environment. This completes the learning material for this unit.
