What is Dual Credit? According to The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, Dual Credit is a process by which a high school student enrolls in a college course and receives simultaneous academic credit for the course from both the college and the high school. The following information pertains to dual credit courses being taught at Carroll Senior High School. Later, we will discuss the necessary steps to enroll in a summer course taught at TCC. What is Dual Credit? According to The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, Dual Credit is a process by which a high school junior or senior enrolls in a college course and receives simultaneous academic credit for the course from both the college and the high school. While dual credit courses are often taught on the secondary school campus to high school students only, a high school student can also take a course on the college campus and receive both high school and college credit.

Who should take Dual Credit?
Students… Students highly motivated and willing to work hard. Students who do NOT procrastinate. Students determined to graduate with college credits. Students who are currently enrolled in AP English 3 should talk to their HS counselor first.

How to Enroll? 1) -Juniors may enroll in Gov’t and/or Econ
(need at least an 80 in current social studies class) -Seniors may enroll in English 4 or Gov’t/Econ (need at least an 80 in English 3 and/or US History) 2) The CSHS Guidance Office will provide official student transcripts to TCC. 3) TCC Connect will come to CSHS to help students complete the online application on March 21, 22, 27 and 28 (sign up for a session via the dual parents rec’d on March 7) How to Enroll? 1) Only Juniors and Seniors are eligible for dual credit courses. 2) Notify your High School Counselor and they will pull your official transcript to be submitted to TCC. 3)There will be a set time that TCC will come to the High School to help you fill out the online application and administer the Pre-Assessment Activity (PAA).

How to Enroll? 4) Students will have an opportunity to take the TSI-A at the TCC NE Campus if the student is not TSI exempt. Students will be able to test on a walk-in basis at the Test Center, and an appointment is not needed. Students must have a TCC ID number prior to testing, and all testing must be completed prior to the dual credit deadline of April 28, 2017. 5) Students exempt from the TSI-A based on ACT/SAT test scores must submit an official copy of their scores to the TCC NE Campus Registrar’s Office if scores are not on their high school transcript or score card. How to Enroll? 4) Texas Success Initiative (TSI) Assessment will take place on the high school campus in the spring (or possibly at TCC Campus, unless otherwise exempt). • The TSI Assessment is the approved placement test used by educational institutions to assist in determining if a student is prepared for a college-level courses and to aid institutions in making course placement decisions. Students will take the Reading, Writing, and Math portion of the TSI 5) Immediately following the test, the student will receive results to go over with their counselor as to what classes they are eligible for. The first test is FREE, if you need to re-test, the fee is $11 6). If the student is exempt based on other official test scores (ACT, SAT, PSAT, STAAR) an original and official copy must be submitted to their high school counselor.

How to Enroll? 6) Once students complete the High School Early Enrollment Form with their counselor, the TCC Dual Credit Coordinator will pick up the completed student application/registration packet for processing. TCC will register all students in their course section(s) for dual credit classes at their high school. How to Enroll? 7) Once the student signs the Early High School Enrollment Form with their counselor, the Dual Credit Coordinator will pick up the completed packet to get the students enrolled in the correct course section at their high school. 8) Once students are enrolled in class, they will need to make a payment either through their TCC WebAdvisor account or make a payment in person at any TCC Business Services Office.

How to Enroll? 7) The registration process is complete when students make a tuition payment through their TCC WebAdvisor account online or in person at any TCC Business Services Office. Tuition payment plans are available, and students should contact Business Services for more information after they have been registered for courses.

Deadline for Participation
Students participating in Dual Credit for the academic year at CSHS, should complete all testing and paper work by: April 28, 2017 Deadline for Applications For students wanting to register for fall/spring school year, all testing and paper work should be completed by TCC deadlines.

Dual Credit Requirements
Dual Credit students must meet course prerequisite requirements before enrolling in classes. Students may only enroll in up to two Dual Credit courses per semester, unless authorized by the high school principal or school designee to enroll in additional courses. Students may not drop a Dual Credit course without permission from the high school counselor. It is the student’s responsibility to notify his/her counselor. Students must attend class 85% of the time. Failure to do so may result in the professor dropping the students from the class. An Investment with Benefits Dual Credit vs. Advanced Placement
Advanced Placement (AP) Dual Credit (DC) Description Allows students to take college-level courses and exams, and to earn college credit or placement while still in high school. Allows high school students to simultaneously earn high school and college credit by completing courses at their high school. Credit No guarantee upon completion of course; must pass The College Board Exam with a 3 or above. Guaranteed college credit upon successful completion of course. Teacher/Instructors Taught by the high school teachers trained by The College Board. Taught by college instructors and/or high school teachers who serve as adjunct professors. College/University Acceptance Accepted throughout the nation. See individual college institution for their policy. Accepted at public college and universities in Texas. As well as many other colleges and universities across the nation. See individual college for their policy. Location Courses are taught at the high school. Courses may be taught at the high school, online, or at a Tarrant County College Campus. Eligibility Open to any student Must be identified as in 11th or 12th grade. Tuition Costs $59 per credit hour for Tarrant County residents. ($177 per course) Grant funds may be available through a reimbursement program. High school students who have earned 24 college credits or more upon graduation save about $15,000. An Investment with Benefits $165 per course ($55/credit hour). Financial Aid may be available. Dual Credit Textbooks After the student has received a Dual Credit schedule from their high school counselor, they can purchase their textbook(s) at any TCCD Campus Follett Bookstore or online at Students may also purchase their textbooks from any provider, as long as the ISBN matches the text required for their course. Students are expected to have their textbooks on the first day of class. Textbook info will be ed to students in August. Dual Credit Textbooks After the student has received a Dual Credit schedule from their high school counselor, they will obtain their textbook(s) at Follett Bookstore. Students may purchase the textbooks online, if they choose to write in the book, through the Follett Bookstore at Students must have their textbooks on the first day of class.

How to be Successful… High School vs. College
College Classes: Student Responsibility (accountability). You must communicate with your professor. FERPA Laws and Dual Credit Attendance will be taken daily. Involvement in extracurricular activities does not excuse the student from course responsibilities. Syllabus outlines the course requirements and expectations of the instructor. Students taking a 3-semester hour class should set aside a minimum of 6 hours per week to study. Tarrant County College (TCC) policy allows faculty to withdraw students for excessive absences. Involvement in extra curricular activities does not excuse the student from course responsibilities.
