1 16.3 Pregnancy, Development, and Birth Class Notes

2 Pregnancy, Development, and Birth Egg can be fertilized during the first few days of ovulation Sexual activity occurs, sperm may be deposited into or near the vagina Sperm travels through the vagina, into and through the uterus and then into the fallopian tube If sperm fertilizes an egg, pregnancy can occur Earliest sign is a woman’s menstrual cycle stops Nine months after fertilization, a baby is born

3 Development Before Birth Fertilized egg or zygote, is no bigger than a period After fertilization, zygote undergoes changes that result in a new baby Key term: The zygote develops into an embryo and then into a fetus. Differentiation leads to specialized cells, tissues and organs.

4 From Zygote to Embryo Zygote moves from fallopian tube to the uterus which takes about 4 days and continues to divide Orginial cell divides to make two cells The two cells divide to make four and so on The mass of hundreds of cells forms a hollow ball not very different in size from the zygote The ball attaches to the lining of the uterus From the two-cell stage through the eighth week of development, it is called an embryo

5 Differentiation of the Embryo First day or two cell divisions in the 4-cell stage produce 8 cells, 16 cells and so on All cells look alike During the 1 st week after fertilization, cells rearrange into a hollow ball This ball of cells attaches to the wall of the uterus

6 continued 3 rd week- some cells of the embryo begin to fold into the center of the ball Other cells fill in spaces between the folds Changes lead to three layer of the cells Layer in which cells are located determines or fixes how it will differentiation Differentiation: The process by which cells change and become specialized

7 continued example: cells that will be the stomach and intestines are located in a different layer from cells that will be the central nervous system Becomes distinguished from one another at a very early stage As development continues, cells become more finely differentiated

8 Development of the Fetus From 9 th week to birth, developing human is called fetus Fetus is only the size of a walnut but looks more like a human Internal organs have formed Head is about half the body’s total size and brain is developing rapidly Has dark eye patches, fingers and toes 3 months, fetus is about 9 centimeters long and weighs about 26 grams

9 continued Between 4 th and 6 th month- bones become distinct Heartbeat can be heard with a stethoscope Layer of soft hair grows over the skin Arms and legs develop more completely Fetus begins to move and kick showing signs of muscular development End of 6 th month- weighs about 700 grams and is 30 centimeters long

10 continued Final 3 months prepare the fetus to survive outside the mother’s body Brain develops grooves and ridges Lungs become ready to carry out the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide Eyelids can open Fetus doubles in length Can weigh as much as 3 kilograms or more

11 Protection and Nourishment Fetus needs protection and nourishment to develop properly Key term: the membranes and other structure that form during development protect and nourish the developing embryo, and later the fetus

12 Amniotic Sac Amniotic sac: surrounds the embryo and develops into a fluid- filled sac Fluid in the amniotic sac cushions and protects the developing baby

13 Placenta and Umbilical Cord Placenta: an organ that develops from fetal tissue during pregnancy In the placenta, embryo’s blood vessels are located next to the mother’s blood vessels Ropelike structure called umbilical cord forms between the embryo and the placenta It contains veins and arteries that link the fetus to the mother

14 continued Blood systems do not mix Blood travels back and forth through the umbilical cord Fetus receives nutrients, oxygen and other substances from the mother Carbon dioxide and other wastes move from the fetus to the mother Mother’s body then releases the wastes through her excretory and respiratory systems

15 Keeping the Fetus Healthy The two blood supplies stops some diseases from spreading from the mother to the fetus Some infectious viruses can pass easily Example: HIV (virus that causes AIDS), alcohol, tobacco and other drugs Pregnant women should not smoke, drink alcohol or take any drug without a doctor's approval

16 Birth About 40 weeks of development inside the uterus the baby is ready to be born Key term: -The birth of a baby takes place in three stages- labor, delivery, and afterbirth

17 Labor 1 st stage of birth- strong muscular contractions of the uterus begins Contractions is called labor Contractions cause the cervix to open, eventually allowing the baby to fit through the opening Labor can last from 2 hours to more than 20 hours

18 Delivery 2 nd stage of birth is called delivery During normal delivery, baby is pushed completely out of the uterus, through the vagina and out the mother’s body Baby is still connected to the placenta by the umbilical cord Delivery takes less time than labor does- from several minutes to an hour or more

19 continued Shortly after delivery, umbilical cord is clamped and cut about 5 centimeters from the baby’s abdomen Within 7 to 10 days the remainder of the umbilical cord dries up and falls off leaving a scar called the navel or belly button

20 Afterbirth About 15 minutes after delivery, the 3 rd stage begins Contractions push the placenta and other membranes out of the uterus through the vagina This stage called the afterbirth is usually done in less than 1 hour

21 Birth and the Baby With contractions, the baby’s supply of oxygen decreases and heart rate goes up Within few seconds of delivery, baby begins breathing with a cry or a cough Helps rid the lungs of fluid and fills them with air

22 Multiple Births Delivery of more than one baby from a single pregnancy is called multiple birth In US about 1 out of 30 babies born are twins Multiple births of more than two babies such as triplets and quadruplets, occur less frequently than do twin births

23 continued Two types of twins: identical and fraternal Identical twins develop from a single fertilized egg or zygote Early in development, the embryo splits into two identical embryos Two embryos have identical inherited traits and are the same sex Fraternal twins develop when two eggs are released from the ovary and are fertilized by two different sperm Fraternal twins are no more alike than other brothers or sisters May not be the same sex

24 Growth and Development Key term: The changes that take place between infancy and adulthood include physical changes, such as an increase in size and coordination and mental changes such as the ability to communicate and solve complex problems

25 Infancy Infancy: 1 st two years of life Baby grows rapidly Weight doubles within the first year Nervous and muscular systems become better coordinated 3 months baby can hold head up and reach for objects 4 to 14 months: begins to crawl and then walk, learn to speak By two years, can do many things for themselves

26 childhood Infancy ends and childhood beings about 2 years of age Grow taller and heavier as their bones and muscles increase in size Become more coordinated Show a growing curiosity and increased mental abilities Skills such as reading, solving problems and having a conversation improve rapidly

27 Adolescence Stage of development during which children mature into adults physically and mentally is called adolescence Become able to think like an adult and take adult responsibilities Bodies of adolescents undergo specific physical changes Between 9 and 15 years, girls and boys enter puberty

28 continued Puberty: the period of development in which the body becomes able to reproduce Girls begins to menstruate, breast enlarges and hips widen boys produce sperm, facial and chest hair appears and voice deepens

29 Adulthood Mental and emotional growth continue after adolescence Difficult to say when adolescence ends and adulthood begins As adults, people continue to learn new things About 30 years old, aging begins As aging begins, skin becomes wrinkled and muscle strength decreases Eyes may lose their ability to focus on close objects Hair may lose their coloring (gray hairs)

30 continued Aging becomes more noticeable between 40 and 65 Aging can be slowed down by diet and exercise
