What is this showing? What does it mean? What might we be looking at in today’s lesson?

Population and Resources Target Questions: Where do people live? Why do people live in some places and not others? Which factors can affect changes in population?

Population Key Terms Population Population Distribution Population Density The number of people per square kilometre Identifies areas of high and low population The total number of people living in a particular area

TASK: Use the jelly babies to plot where you think the worlds population is distributed. Target Questions: Where do people live? Work effectively as a team.

Questions to Think About... Which areas have a denser population? Why did you put the Jelly Babies where you did?

What is demography..? The study of people. The situation is dynamic NOT static. Population numbers, distributions and structures constantly change in time and space at different levels.

What can cause population change? StatisticsReal Life

BIRTH RATE DEATH RATE LIFE EXPECTANCY LONGEVITY NATURAL CHANGE A measure of an area’s fertility. It is expressed as the number of live births per 1,000 people in one year. The number of deaths per 1,000 people in one year. The average number of years from birth that a person can expect to live. The increase in the life expectancy over a period of time. It is a result of medical advances and development but can cause issues with old populations. The change in size of the population due to the relationship between birth and death rates. If BR is bigger that DR then population increases, if DR is bigger than BR then population decreases.

What does this graph show? Can you explain the trends? What else can you notice?

CHALLENGES WITH CHANGING POPULATION? VIDEO
